Can anyone help me find out the names of the contraceptive pills that are actually abortifacients ?

God bless,

Hal

as far as I know, all of them…but I’m sure someone will be along shortly to provide links.

I don’t think that’s correct. The one I know if, that my wife as on years ago (we were protestant at the time - and I’m sure this was one of the reasons it took YEARS to get pregnant the first time) was Ortho-Tri-cyclen. The Tri is because it adds the abortificient… we definitely didn’t know this while she was on it but only found out years later while trying to get pregnant.

Maybe there are others but this is the one I know about.

I believe all of them are abortifacients. Regardless, the use of contraception to prevent conception is intrinsically evil abortifacient or not.

Although some contraceptive pills, like the combined oral contraceptive pill (“The Pill”), Plan B, and morning-after pills, are designed primarily to prevent ovulation or fertilization, they also have the secondary effect of preventing implantation, so they can really be both contraceptive and abortifacient. Preventing implantation means that a fertilized egg will eventually die. The exact mechanism of action for many contraceptive and abortifacient drugs is, surprisingly, poorly understood, although RU-486 (“The Abortion Pill”) is clearly abortifacient because it induces the death of an embryo up to two months into a pregnancy. Thus all birth control pills can be abortifacient. This is why they are an intrinsic evil.

This site does a good job explaining it all.

Anything that can be classified as a combined oral contraceptive (COC) is potentially abortifacient. That includes most common birth control pills, the NuvaRing, and the patch.

Here is some information from the American Association of pro-life obstetricians and gynecologists:

obsthttp://www.aaplog.org/decook.htm

Essentially they say that there is no evidence to support the pill as an abortifacient.

The article is heavy going, but has it there in black and white.

“However, there is no direct evidence in the literature to support the third proposed method of action (prevention of implantation after conception). This conclusion is shared by the respected Gynecologic Endocrinology textbook authors Yen and Jaffe”.

**i.e. contraception is not abortion. **

I wonder why you didn’t put the rebuttal from several other doctors from the AAPLOG

aaplog.org/collition.htm

They state that it is.
The undersigned believe that the facts as detailed in this document indicate the abortifacient nature of hormonal contraception. This is supported by the scientific work of the Alan Guttmacher Institute which can, in no way, be confused with a right-to-life organization. We also want to make it clear that we have no desire to cause confusion and division among pro-life forces. However, we do want to make it clear that we do desire that all women using the pill are truthfully and fully informed about all its modes of action.

The original versions of the pill (40 years ago) were ovulatory suppressant. But, the very high doses of hormones necessary to do that gave women heart attacks and strokes in alarming numbers so they had to reformulate.

All the pills since the 1980s are either “low dose” or “combination” pills-- and they all work the same way. The three mechanisms of possibly suppressing ovulation, changing mucus, and inhibiting implantation. This is because of the much lower level of hormones necessary to be safer.

Same with the “patch” and the “ring” and such.

www.omsoul.com has several pamphlets written by doctors explaining the abortifacient nature of the pill.

Birth control pills are intrinsically evil due to their contraceptive action as well as their abortafacient action. All contraception is intrinsically evil whether it is abortafacient or not.Just wanted to clariyfy so that anyone reading this post would not assume that another contraceptive method isn’t intrinsically evil.

I also wanted to add that anyone can check the information that comes with a particular medication see what it’s action is. If it is your medication you get that info when you pick up your presciption. Otherwise you can go look at the PDR . Sometimes the actual product information is online. Usually in PDF form. The phamacist will give you another copy if you have thrown away this information.

Hi, I’m not sure about this. I used to take this (unfortunately) the tri part had to do with the hormone levels being increased in three cycles…so every week you got another higher dose of hormones. My ob at the time said that this wasn’t a low dose but a pretty high dose contraceptive. (Perhaps she should have checked my heart at some point, Thank God, I didn’t have any complications due to the Pill and heart problems)

The Pill, in general, is abortifacient, because it does not allow for implantation. It doesn’t work the same way as RU-487, that actually attacks the cells of the developing baby, and attacks the placenta.

aaplog.org/decook.htm

Here is the full article by pro-life doctors arguing that there is no scientific proof that the pill acts as an abortifacient. It is pretty technical, but it is very good…and makes much sense. They don’t deny that it is possible, but that there is no scientific evidence to support the claim.

The opposite view from the same website is already posted in this thread…it is aaplog.org/collition.htm. I think this is a pretty weak rebuttal, scientficically speaking, though they do make some decent claims about the problems with the claims of ease of implantation of blasticists in the fallopian tubes. But they admit there is no study to back up the claims the pill acts as an abortifacient…and they basically ignore the strongest argument that the endometrium is not likely hostile *if ovulation occurs *while on the pill.

I thought the tri stood for both things. The pills, if I remember correctly were colored different for the three different phases right? Anyway, it was later that I found out the tri meant 2 different things. Perhaps that information is incorrectly though.

I can tell you though that for years afterwords we had implantation problems. 😦

Now we have 3 boys and 1 on the way though 👍
