That they remembered her with the title “Virgin” shows that they thought she did, though (and since ‘they’ were the people whom Protestants consider to be the “brothers of Christ” I should think that if they were, in fact, physical siblings of Christ, born of Mary, they would have known about that, and not given her the title Virgin.)
The title “Virgin” would refer to the virginal conception of Christ or her state as a virgin at the time of His conception and birth. The continued use of the term in reference to her in turn referred back the the central even of her existence; the birth of Christ.

It doesn’t necessarily refer to her continued state as a virgin after that, though.

Not at all.

If I say, “The Virgin Agnes defeated the giant,” am I identifying her virginity with the time when she slew the giant, or am I identifying a person (the Virgin Agnes) who did something (slew a giant)?
I admit that it could be either way, but I’d assume the former. In other words, I would see nothing whatever odd about the following passage:

“The virgin Agnes defeated the giant and rescued the knight whom the giant was holding captive. Then she married the knight and had twelve children.”

(I like the feminist and Catholic tone of this story we’re coming up with–maybe we should publish it!)

And true, I didn’t capitalize “virgin.” But capitalization was not used to mark proper names or titles (as far as I know) in ancient Greek, so the way I’ve capitalized it is perfectly true to the way the original readers of the Creed would have experienced it.

I was just wondering if your treatment of “denominations” in "Which Protestant Demoninations believe… " was a freudian slip?..
I am not following what you’re saying. Can you expand on this and I’ll read it tomorrow? Thanks.

OHHHH!! Okay, I just got it!! I guess I need to proofread a little better, huh? Maybe I could ask a moderator to correct that for me.

Ahhh, no problem. We all knew what he meant.😉

I was wondering which denominations recite the Creed in their church. By this I am really refering to the Apostle’s Creed, moreso than the Nicene. I think it’s pretty safe to say that all the Baptist branches don’t, right? I thought the Methodists did as well as the Episcopal/Anglicans? Are there any others? Thanks!
I know this is sort of off topic but…one IFB (that’s Independant, Fundamental, Baptist) church I went to growing up never mentioned the Creed, but did recite, on occasion, the following:
Confession of Faith
We believe in the verbal inspiration and authority of the Scriptures.
We believe that the Bible reveals God, the fall of man, the way of salvation and God’s plan and purpose in the ages.
We believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe in the deity, virgin birth, substitutionary atonement, and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We believe that salvation is “by grace,” plus nothing and minus nothing. The conditions to salvation are repentance and faith.
We believe that men are justified by faith alone and are accounted righteous before God only through the merit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Justification establishes an eternal relationship that can never be broken.
We believe in the visible, personal and pre-millennial return of Jesus Christ.
We believe in the everlasting conscious blessedness of the saved and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost.
And if you wanted to attend their college you had to sign a statment that you believed this.

Peace,
+Nathan

Before I came home to the Catholic Faith, I was Methodist and in the creed it was the holy litte “c” catholic church…meaning universal. One of the things that got me to wondering some years ago…
Blessings~
I just find it hard to believe that another denomination would say the Apostles’ Creed and not omit the part about believing in the “Holy Catholic Church”, if they truly believed their church was the true church. Any Lutherans or any other denomination that’s not Catholic and recites this want to comment on that???

I have family members and friends who are Lutheran and Methodist. Both my Lutheran and Methodist family and friends believe in and recite the Apostle’s Creed! 🙂 They are good Christain men and women, and I love them very much! :yup: :amen: :bible1: ❤️
