I was just thinking, what do you find to be the easiest religion to debunk, and why do you find it easy to debunk?
The forum atmosphere is not friendly at all and this kind of thread will spread hatred only. I request moderator to close down it.

I’d call the easiest large religion to debunk the whole JW spectrum, because of the multiple false prophecies and lack of qualification on the part of their translation team. But they aren’t allowed to listen to opposition.
Then Scientology and every other new, tech-based or pseudoscientific system, because it’s so easy to find the evidence the founders were openly making it up, because it doesn’t work and because of the documents telling the middling levels not to share the real beliefs with newcomers, so how would they know they themselves even have the straight story on what thye’re promoting?
Around third or fourth I’d consider it a tie between LDS and similar religions, and Dan-Brown/Acharya-S/Joseph-Campbell theories, because the historic evidence is so overwhelming that they misrepresent religious history vastly at pretty much every stage and have changed their own stories constantly as well. Danbrownists also share with JW’s a strange resistance to looking at ancient historic documents at all without misrepresenting them in the crudest ways, and even seem not to notice that every historian is aware of the Roman custom of crucifixion, which has left unmistakable physical evidence. But they also tend not to listen to those who disagree.
Fifth easiest? Who knows. Islam, because of the lack of any witnesses to Mohammed’s revelations? Any other self-proclaimed, unevidenced founder-prophet, such as the Unification Church or the Children of God or Alamo…? Any other unqualified Bible scholar, such as Harold Camping or that guy Darwin Fish (real name) of “a-true-church” or Tim LaHaye or Dave Hunt…?
Interesting.

I would consider the word “debunk” to include disproving it to the point that the person you are talking to (the believer) would willingly agree with you and leave his faith.

It is really very easy to debunk ANY faith that isn’t yours–to yourself or to people who already agree with you. How about debunking something to a true believer?

What faith do you know enough about so that, if you are debating religion with an adherent of that religion, could you ‘debunk’ to HIM???

As for me, the religion I find easiest to debunk is—none of 'em. I don’t even try. It’s rude, it’s ineffective, and it’s a waste of time.

I mean, just look at me: I’ve had people attempting to ‘debunk’ Mormonism to me for over 45 years, and I’m still a believer. I think you will find that to be true far more often than not; nothing cements a belief quite as well as opposition to it.

The best way to do this?

Pretend that you don’t know a single thing about what your listener believes (not much pretending there…you probably don’t, not really) and simply share what you believe to be true. Let your listener do his own comparing…and if, with the Holy Ghost’s confirmation of his sincere prayer he comes to agree with you, then he has debunked his own faith.

And you didn’t even have to study his in order to do it.

criptures.
  1. applies to RCCism, 6) could be applied in a sense to jesus, 7) is true and 3) would be true in terms of latin if it were not for the reformation.
However neo-pagainsm is easiest to debunk in many ways but some of it is grounded in a hint of history, however scientology would be the easiet due to L Ron Hubbards statement about the easiest way to make money!
Please do not refer to our Faith as RCCism it is at best lazy and at worst extremely disrespectful:(

I do not try to debunk other religions, I just try to find information on them.

If any religion were able to be debunked, nobody would follow it

Can something be bunked?
Sure…according to the OED, ‘bunk’ is short for ‘bunkum,’ which is ‘nonsense.’ …and it used to be used as such…such as “putting the bunk on me.”

Oh, why did I go to the OED?

Because awhile back I had heard that the word ‘debunk’ was originally a Catholic term, referring specifically to the process of removing saints from their ‘bunks,’ or elevation to sainthood, when it is discovered that they were not, after all, actually saints. (St. Christopher comes to mind here) The term then came to mean ‘proving something false.’

Makes rather good sense, actually; elegant, logical…but before I went and pontificated about something like that, I thought I would check it out and make certain that the etymology of the word really was that; it would have been too good to be true if it was…and I was correct.

It was too good to be true.

Darn.

Was a nice story, too.

Ah, well.

:d :d :d I’m trying to use the laughing emoticon but it won"t work.

I dunno.

I would think that, if one was successful at debunking someone’s faith, that person would leave that faith.

I don’t know of anyone that I have personally convinced to quit their faith, and/or join the Catholic church. So, I guess I haven’t succeeded in debunking anything, if all I’m doing is “preaching to the choir.”

I’ll admit, though, that there are some that it is more fun to debunk than others - but that sheds an ugly light on me. It’s easy and fun to come up with snappy comebacks and devastating sarcasm, but it is not charitable.

That’s why I like debating on the internet - I have a chance to edit the patronizing, sarcastic, and mean remarks out of my posts. Sometimes I miss that chance. 😦

God bless us all,

Ruthie

Catholicism explained by you self professed knowledgable Catholics.
My friend, would not then be as fair to say: Catholicism explained to you by self professed knowledgable ex-Catholics?

Been a little rowdy lately…🙂

I’m not sure about which religion I find easiest to debunk, but I do know that I find it easiest to debunk my own faith. I know how shallow my faith is, even when others may see something stronger and deeper. As for debunking a religion, I would prefer not to do that at all, but rather seek ways to understand why a person may believe that particular religion and hope my own faith is stronger than I think.

‘Debunk’ sounds like a very aggressive word and is aimed at ridiculing someone else.

Perhaps you can debunk things in your own mind but the word seems to suggest the ridiculing and challeging of someone else.

Often the challenging and ridiculing seems to overtake the search for truth IMHO.

I plead guilty to that as well.😦

I think Scientology is one - just look at who L Ron Hubbard was (failed science fiction writer) and the teachings (which mostly sound like - oddly enough - bad science fiction writing!) and the massive amounts of money charged to progress within the “church”
hey Hey HEY!!! I really enjoyed Battle Field Earth (the book)

As far as debunking, Mormonism, Islam and the Church of the Great Spaghetti Monster

Scientology. Sounds like science fiction, was founded by a science fiction writer, and operates strangely like a pyramid scheme.
Scientology IS science fiction.
The creator, the esteemed L. Ron Hubbard, developed the faith based off of ideas mentioned in his novels (Battlefield Earth, amongst others) as a tax dodge… basically, he developed an entire religion based off his own sci fi novels just to escape the IRS.

y’know, as a TBM (true believing Mormon) I’m getting a little irritated at this constant bragging about being able to ‘debunk’ Mormonism.

OF COURSE you can debunk Mormonism–to another non-Mormon who already agrees with you. That’s a little like being able to debunk the idea that you can breath water.

Now—try debunking that idea to a fish.

When you can ‘debunk’ Mormonism to, say…ME…

Then you can claim that it is ‘easy’ to debunk.

(grumbling to self…)

Fallacies can only be debunked TO people who are open to honest information. If one is open to the truth then you can receive truth.

The same logical and theological reasoning that showed me that Mormonism is false would debunk it to anyone who was open to the truth.
