Ignatius of Loyola, definitely, but you’ve got some things tangled up! You can read what he said in his autobiography.
He was wounded in a war as a young man. One leg had to be surgically stretched (very painful and long recovery) so he could walk again. At a relative’s home where he was lying day after day in bed, he asked for some books. They brought him some popular chivalric romances (the kind Teresa of Avila said she also loved to read before her conversion!) and some saints’ biographies (The Golden Legend, for one). Ignatius began to notice how he felt after reading both types of books. He felt wonderful reading the romance but restless and depressed afterward (I’m paraphrasing here). He felt just ok reading the saints’ works but afterwards felt zeal to accomplish what they did. From these two differing feelings he began to discern the spiritual life–and Ignatian discernment.
