Which saints suffered the most most gruesome deaths? Saint Febronia is one…

St. Denis, who after being decapitated, picked up his own head and strolled from Paris to Saint-Denis while continuing to preach.

If God calls me to be a martyr, I hope I can have the strength to have the cheek and nerves of St. Lawrence, who was roasted alive on a grill. “Turn me over! I’m done on this side!”

I always feel bad for St. Sebastian, who was basically killed by low tech firing squad…

It seems to be rather popular to depict it in art. Maybe that’s why I feel so bad for him-it always looks pretty unfun.

Bartholomew was the first one that came to my mind as well.

Even in the midst of agonizing tortune, he still had a sense of humor. That is one remarkable man.

Yep, St Bartholomew was the first one that came to my mind too. I remember showing my kids a statue a few months back and they asked about the “cloth” draped around his shoulders. I told them it was not cloth, but his skin and my daughter blanched when I explained he was skinned alive.

st florian agreed to be burned at the stake; so diocletian drowned him out of spite

St Philomena was tortured for days and left chained, was shot at with arrows, when that didn’t work she was tied to,a heavy anchor and thrown into a river, when that didn’t work she was lanced. She was only a teenager of about fourteen.
Her parents had taken her with them to visit a king and he took a shine to her but she was determined to remain a Christian virgin.

(St Philomena was relied on heavily by St Vianney.)

Common misconception - St Sebastian survived the arrows and was nursed back to health. He was later clubbed to death after confronting the emperor.

With power/grace of God, most all things are possible. p.s. Ever heard of a phenomenon called ‘blind sight’ 😁

As for ‘gruesome deaths’, there are many - having done in depth research into my own family tree, that includes saints as well as sociopaths and psychopaths, I can assure you that there are many 'imaginative and creative ways of inflicting, maximising and stringing out pain in fellow man/woman. Some have suffered crucifixion, one or two, hanging, drawing and quartering, a couple burned at the stake; one unfortunate historic great-grandmother was flung into a dungeon, given no food and only minimal water [to string things out], she was reduced to gnawing at her bedding before she finally starved to death. It is said that for those saints that are so closely united to God during their deaths, no matter how gruesome, that it is as though they did not feel the pain over the bliss of being with God.

St Lucia (Lucy) comes to my mind.

Reading what saint Perpetua, and an eyewitness, wrote in her diary about her suffering and coming death. Martyred in 203 with saint Felicitas and followers.

Fauken - Saint Laurence is my namesake - the grill/grid he was supposedly roasted on can be seen on the WWW.
