Just wondering as i have only over the last month “found” God,which of the Protestant theologies are closest to the Catholic Church (if any). My friend told me Pentecostalism was (i asked the question in another thread) and obviously he was messing me about. I was just wondering though and another final question, do people out there believe that people who follow Christianity, yet are not from the Catholic Church, will go to Gods heaven? If not why not?

Thank you once again!

God bless!

I would veture to guess that Lutherans would be the closest since that was the first time a seperate faith broke away from the catholic church.

Not sure if you are including Eastern Orthodox churches in the “Protestant” title. They are definitely the closest to Catholics though. If not, I would probably agree with the other poster - Lutheran…maybe Anglican too.

Yeah, I forgot about the Easten Orthodox church they are actually allowed to take part in Catholic communion.

The Eastern Orthodox are the Closest to the Catholic faith. In fact the Eastern Catholics and the Orthodox believe exactly the same way. The Anglicans and the Lutherans are also pretty similir to the Catholic faith.

The others are completely different. They reject pretty much everything the Catholic Church says other than the trinity.

Eastern Orthodox Churches are probably fairly close; however, the Lutherans are also fairly close as well on different theological issues.

Other Christians can go to Heaven. What we believe is that the Catholic Church is the fulness of the truth and that those in The Catholic Church recieve the fulness of Gods truth and Grace.

I would believe Lutherans are but there are some major differences.

As regards the ‘Lord’s Supper’, the con-substantiation is quite different from trans-substantiantion. But without priests, there never could be trans-substantiontiation. So their theology is possibly correct for what they have as the lord’s supper.

As to Anglicans, at one time I would say they were close to the Church, but recent changes in the Abortion, Gay-iety issues leaves them far behind even the evangelical/fundamentalists. The evangelical/fundamentialists are quite close to us on the issues of sin and God’s word found in scripture.

I’m only in RCIA.

I’m a member of a predominantly Black Baptist Church.
And I have been to Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal, non-denominational (Charismatic), and a few other types of Churches.

Obviously Eastern Orthodox Catholic, other Orthodox Catholic, etc are the closest to Roman Catholicism.

Aside from that, I am so impressed that Roman Catholicism (that I am now discovering in RCIA) seems to be quite similar to Judaism.

For example, birth control. If you look up “Kosher Sex” (see jewfaq.org/sex.htm ) it is more similar to Catholic teaching than most Protestant teaching.

I recently visited the Franciscan “Holy Land of America”.
See myfranciscan.com/
During my visit, I thought it was one of the most Jewish places I’ve ever been.

Thanks for the link, I’ve heard about this just recently. Too bad I didn’t know about it when I lived there.

We all know that the Dionysius fertility cults of the 2nd century A.D. are the closest to Catholicism

Eastern Orthodox. My baptized RC daughter married a Serbian Orthodox in an absolutely beautiful wedding Mass that lasted over an hour! (standing for much of it!) I felt very comfortable at the Mass. The church was also quite lovely. Many icons of the Blessed Mother and Saints. I was raised Lutheran and know there is a major gulf between Lutheranism and The RCC. I left when the woman pastor took over. 🙂

I agree with what some others here have said. At one time Anglican/Episcopalians were in some ways but because of their embracing of liberalism that is no longer the case. There are some “continuing” Anglican splinter groups that are orthodox so in their case they are close. Before I moved back home (due my elderly father needing someone to look after him) I attended a Reformed Episcopal Parish which is orthodox (no women Priests, no Gay marriages, Pro-Life, right belief in the Holy Trinity, and very Sacramental) they would be close to the Catholic Church. SOME Lutherans like the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod also. Both have a Sacramental world view both follow the Liturgical Calendar and formal Liturgies focused on worshipping God. jurist12,

Thanks.

Many groups within the Anglican Communion are still very orthodox. Especially the African churches, from what I’ve heard. Even the Church of England, which has many liberal elements within it, has spoken out against the election of a homosexual bishop in America.

In reality, I would say that the Eastern Orthodox churches are closest to Catholic theology—but many Orthodox Christians would disagree. (They seem more likely to view ‘issue A’ or ‘issue B’ as a point of doctrinal difference between our churches than Catholics do). Of course, if you are referring to the theology of the Eastern Catholic Churches, with the exception of the papacy, it is virtually identical to that of the schismatic Eastern churches.

The REC are generally not terribly sacramental, though there are exceptions. The parish in my town only has communion every other week–though admittedly that’s still better than most Protestants. But the REC is generally much less sacramental than ECUSA–indeed that’s one of the reasons they split originally; they were protesting the movement toward Catholicism within Anglicanism.

I clicked on the link, i found some similarities between Catholisicm and Judaism. Our teaching on most things is the same, but as far as Abortion, i think i just lost a little respect for the Jewish faith.

Lutheranism would probably be the closest theologically to Catholicism. Eastern Orthodoxy by the way, is not considered as Protestant so that excludes them from the question. Gerry 🙂

Orthodox view Catholicism and Protestantism as two sides of the same coin. Orthodoxy and Catholicism are quite different ontologically though they may appear similiar in the externals.
