Which Tridentine Missal is best?

  1. Hello everyone! I have been attending the 1962 Tridentine Mass (Extraordinary Form) and feel its time to purchase a full hand missal, but not sure where to start. I do not want to support any schismatic groups (SSPX, SSPV, CMRI, etc.). Where am I to look? Who has produce a 1962 hand missal who is faithful to the hierarchy of the Church?
  2. I have a brand new copy of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter instructional DVD on the Extraordinary Form" done in conjunction with EWTN. Anyone want to buy it from me? $15.00.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
The differences are very minimal. I personally use an Angelus Press daily missal which is an SPPX one, they are NOT schismatic. The first one I used was a St. Joseph Daily Missal which was easy to use.

Make sure you have lots of ribbons. It is an expensive purchase, so have a good sticky beak before purchase. Baronius Press issues one now with a slip case I think, but you can purchase a cover reasonably cheaply,or if you are crafty you can make one at home.

Make sure the font size suits you and also the paper…which is very thin so as not to bulk up the missal even more.👍

I have both the Angelus and the Baronius missals. In my personal experience, the Angelus “prays better” due to it font size and layout. It requires less page turning to follow the Extraordinary Form.

The Baronius has a higher-end build quality. Its bonded leather cover feels luxurious in the hand. After using it several times, I have decided to keep it in reserve. It now sees service when I invite someone to attend the TLM for the first time.

I can wholeheartedly recommend either missal:

One more thing. When a faithful Catholic has made the Sign of the Cross at the beginning of the TLM - he has already supported the SSPX - and sent Satan running for the tall grass.

Both could use larger font size for the Latin.
 
I use the Angelus Press version exclusively. I was not impressed with the binding quality of my DR Bible by Baronius Press.

The Cannons Regular of St John Cantius are the leaders in promoting the EF. On their site, Sancta Missa, the sell the Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962, which is a reprint of a 1962 Missal (Angelus Press) . Angelus Press is affiliated with the SSPX, and the CR of St John Cantius are in full Communion with Rome. Their is no issue or concern for any Roman Catholic to purchase the Missal reprinted by Angelus, and it’s the one I’d recommend.

The Baronius is nice, but harder to handle during Mass.

I have the Baronius Press Missal. I’ve gotten compliments on it including from a priest that celebrates only the EF Mass (a diocesan priest).
 
Well, I just thought I would throw out the Fater Lasance Missal which I think is about to have another reprint. It follows the older calendar, so even the Pius XII Holy Week is not in there. However, it holds up very well and is one of the fullest of the old missals(second probably to St Andrews Missal). It is on the thick side. I have had mine over 13 years and it is still in very good condition, using it every week and then some.
St Joseph’s is what I started with. It is probably the easiest to start with and has some good prayers in it for the faithful as well. I prefer the latin propers for all the prayers/readings, which most missals do not offer. Just a preference.
Pay attention to the cover. The harder, cardboard-like covers tend to crack. The old St Joseph’s Missal and others can be like this, even though the text/pages will stay together. Also, the “staying open” factor.

I have:
  • SSPX Daily Missal
  • St. Joseph Daily Missal (1956 and 1962 versions) in guilded leather
  • St. Andrew Daily Missal
  • Marian Missal.
I personally find the St. Joseph Daily Missal the easiest to follow along with. If you get one in black leather it will hold up well. It is true the cardboard covers crack with time, the leather does not.

The SSPX Daily Missal is ALMOST as complete as the St. Andrew. St. Andrew is my reference when I need latin and english for pretty much anything to do with Mass. It is old though and not fully up to date for the 1962 missal.

I now use the SSPX daily missal for most Sundays. I keep a couple St. Joseph’s for the kids or friends who come to Mass. It is much easier for them to follow along.
