I personally think that even telling a white lie with someone has the potential to be grave because, you dont know if that person is sensitive or not. its kind of like rolling the dice. The person may not really care about it or they could.

Hi. Difficult to know how to answer without some kind of example to go by. How deep are you labeling a ‘white lie’? Lies are best avoided, full stop. Unless, of course, you are avoiding an unjust aggressor, in which case, you have no obligation towards them, to answer at all.

Lies can seem as shallow as covering up the fact that you fart all the way to making false testimonies. I believe confession is the best remedy for sin.

I believe sometimes you can do a white lie if it is for a good. Like say someone asks you if they are ugly (God forbid say they are) and you say no, you are beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Beauty is only skin deep, But you don’t want to say these things.

So if it hurts no one to fib a bit, to not hurt them I think God would understand.

A horrible example I know!

Now I would cover it up it I did that kind of farting:rotfl::rotfl:
Now I’m obviously trying to encourage our fellow Catholics to get a chuckle in return for some of the dumbest ways we have sinned. I know I have said some crazy (yet true) confessions of complete idiocy. Not only do I feel better being forgiven, but it gives me the power to help others just get it over with. LOL

sometimes it may be the best thing to do, to conceal the truth from someone. But, the commandment refers, I believe, to anything that harms someone else.

There is no such thing as a white lie except in colloquial relativistic language.

We are to say “yes”, if we mean “yes”, and "no, if we mean “no”. However, I tend to agree with this (in bold), but only in terms of not having to say everything that is on one’s mind in every instance, as there is a time and a place for all things, and there is only so much info. people can handle! I suppose we are are talking about ‘tact’, ‘prudence’ and ‘wisdom’. Sometimes, it is simply not our place to use brute force, and such difficult moments could be seen as the balancing of prudence on one end with ‘calling a spade a spade’, on the other. Discernment, patience and appropriating a sufficient amount of sensitivity are abilities to pray for, as they are all needed when acting and speaking, or thinking about doing so, but then the term would need to be changed, from ‘white lie’ to something less self-admonishing, like ‘being kind’.

I tend to think this is true, and that it is better to not say anything than to tell a kind of lie.
And white lies can build up and up, as other posters have mentioned.

I generally just click on new subjects as they pour in to the left and right side of the homepage screen, rather than search for particular topics under headings and sub-headings, rarely being aware what subject-heading I’m debating under. You might have a point here, though! 😛
