It is the essence of Catholicism that Catholics be conservative , for we are called upon to conserve the truth and all that is right and good .
But we are also called upon to be reformers , ridding the Church of deficiencies in conduct , discipline and in the way doctrine may have been formulated .
As the Fathers at the 21st Ecumenical Council of the Church taught us , “Christ summons the Church to continual reformation as she sojourns here on earth. The Church is always in need of this, in so far as she is an institution of men here on earth. Thus if, in various times and circumstances, there have been deficiencies in moral conduct or in church discipline, or even in the way that church teaching has been formulated - to be carefully distinguished from the deposit of faith itself - these can and should be set right at the opportune moment…”
I could quite happily have begun…It is the essence of Catholicism that Catholics be progressive reformers…
Either way suits me , as long as I am being correctly understood .
