I am just new converted Catholic.
I am interesting to study the Catholic Philosophy.
Who are the greatest modern Catholic Philosophers ?
What would be Your advise for the person , who wants to be a good Apologist and the one who is acquainted with the Catholic Philosophy ?
Thank You.

I’ve been researching for free books from Catholic Philosophers since i live in a third world country and i believe these are some of the greatest that ive come across so far

Peter Kreeft
Dietrich von Hildebrand
G.K.Chesterton
Alice von Hildebrand
Thomas Aquinas (Medieval theologian/philosopher)
Jacques Maritain
Thomas Merton(A Trappist monk some of his work are very good while some towards the end of his life are controversial)

Some noteable theologians and apologist.
Mika Aquilina
Scott Hahn
Karl Keeting

I hope these help.

I would add to the above list “Bernard Lonergan”, possibly the greatest of all . And while Scott Hahn is a well known biblical scholar, I’m not sure I would classify him as a philosopher. Other names (appearing in the book “Physics, Philosophy and Theology”, a Common Quest for Understanding", a collection of papers presented at a conference called by Pope John Paul II) are Michael Heller and Ernan McMullin. In addition to these there are many readable books by Fr. Stanley Jaki on the intersection of philosophy, theology, history of science and science.

Best Catholic for apologetics would be Edward Feser. Also, Francis Beckwith deals with things like abortion, euthanasia, etc. John Finnis deals with philosophy of law, especially same-sex marriage issues. These guys are sort of more relevant to your every-day though and they are more accessible (though just as good!).

These guys here are more academic, but they are some of the best the Church has to offer I think:
-Alexander Pruss
-Michael Gorman
-Gyula Klima
-David Oderberg
-Michael Rota
-Eleonore Stump
-John Haldane
-Brian Davies

Also, these guys do more Christian apologetics stuff, though they’re not Catholic. Really worth checking out:
-Victor Reppert
-William Lane Craig
-Tim McGrew

These guys are dead, but they’re really worth checking out:
-Saint Thomas Aquinas
-Blessed John Duns Scotus
-Jacques Maritain
-Bernard Lonergan
-James F. Ross

One who can deal with both philosophy and science is Rev. Robert J. Spitzer.

His new book is New Proofs for the Existence of God, Contributions of Contemporary Physics and Philosophy ISBN: 978-0-8028-6383-6

Any list of the greatest modern Catholic philosophers needs to include Elizabeth Anscombe.

The last truly great philosopher of traditional Catholic doctrine (in my opinion) was Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange.

Would you say that Archbishop Sheen was a great philosopher or theologian? He was educated in and taught philosophy and wrote numerous books, but no one seems to recognize as more than an evangelist.
