Who are these other angels

I know of 3 Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Rapael.

But who are these other angels, NATHANIEL ~ ANGEL OF FIRE, OONIEMME ~ ANGEL OF GRATITUDE, HAAMIAH ~ ANGEL OF INTEGRITY. I know GOD has many different angels in the 9 ranks, but where did these names come from? They seem made up to me since I can’t find a reliable score to back it up. 🤷

I would imagine that they are listed in both ancient Jewish scriptural and non scriptural sources. The Jews have vast writings on Angelogy that have come down through the ages. As to the veracity of any of the non scriptural writings and sources, your guess is as good as mine.🤷
 
As I recall, we are not to have names for the angels besides the Archangels already acknowledged by name by the Church.

Really? I have never heard that. I personally believe to know the name of my guardian angel. I would be very interested to see a source stating the Church does not allow for the knowledge of angel names outside of the Archangels. And I don’t say that to be flippant, I genuinely am interested to know where that comes from. Thanks in advance!

I have heard the same thing, although I cannot remember the basis or source. I feel confident in the fact that this is a correct statement, but I can’t remember why 😃

there was a document published by the CDF on this topic back in 1984?

Essentially, this document says that there is not to be diffused the idea that one can know the name of one's guardian angel that that one is not to invoke the (unknowable) names of angels in prayer.

What the CDF is warning about is the great spiritual danger that can come to a person from trying to invoke angels by name. The naming of angels is something that should be avoided. Not all angels are the friends of God and man. They are mighty beings that transcend our human nature. Some of them are bent on our eternal damnation. They can apply an angelic intellect in tricking us into the loss of heaven. They do not sleep. These are demonic enemies of the soul. Demons do not relent, unless God and His angels, unless the Church God's priest intervene. The naming of fallen angels is part of the rite of exorcism. It is perilous indeed to anyone without the protection and power that comes from the sacrament of Holy Orders to name angels.

This is a foolish and sentimental practice for most people who are into this sort of thing. But it is not benign. While it is not dangerous in all situations, it is dangerous in some. We just cannot know whom or what we are invoking outside the names of the angels friendly to God whose names appear in Holy Writ: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael.

There are billions of angels of the various kinds and all have a name of some sort, but in my humble opinion we really have “no need to know” any other than the few such as Michael and Gabriel. If you knew the names of dozens (and could pronounce them) what good would it do you? They aren’t celestial butlers.

Padre PIo was on very good terms with his guardian angel, but I don’t remember him ever mentioning that the angel went by any particular name.
 
Pope Zaccaria 741-752 (Zachary) in a council held at Rome in 745 prohibited to pray to any Angels outside the 3 explicitly named in Sacred Scripture.

Also the Council held at Aix-la-Chapelle in 789 prohibited to make “lists of names of Angels”

Because of the dangers expressed in my previous posting it is consistent with the teachings of the Church and was reasserted in 2002 to NOT to try to give names to Angels.

The lesson here is also to ensure your info comes from a legitimate Catholic source. It is very common and new age-y to “believe in” angels. I think people get very sentimental about them and even though they’ll dump the rest of Christianity, they still want to keep angels. And no one rememebrs that a third of the angels went with Lucifer.

The Church does teach that we all have a guardian angel and we know there are many more angels in heaven besides the 3 archangels. But we don’t have to know their names or worse, make up names for them like they were pets!

Best advice - stick to the traditional prayers to the archangels, regularly ask your guardian angel to intercede for you, and don’t worry about what other angels may be up to.

My in laws were good Catholics but they must not known of this teaching because my wife of 35 years is an angel and they gave her a name!

Very true…one of my pet peeves is when I hear someone refer to there being a “new angel in heaven” when someone passes away…I just grit my teeth and bite my tongue.

YES! I am with you on this - griting my teeth and offering to pray for the repose of their soul.

Listening to some people angels have become the new fairies it seems.

He has tricked others into believing he is a “good” angel, and given a name.

I’ve always said to myself if an angel of God ever appeared to me the question I would ask first is, “who is Christ”. If an angel can’t answer that question then its a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Something that happened to a monk I know of on Mt. Athos. An “angel” appeared to him and said that he would take him on a journey to Heaven, and showing a pathway up to the sky, the monk said “OK, but first I must pray before the trip” at which the “angel” got irked and disappeared in a huff, when the monk looked again the pathway would have been over the edge of a cliff. The demon in disguise was trying to lead the monk to his death.
