Who are you?

The two great commandments are to Love God and Love our neighbor as ourselves (Mt 22:36-40). Upon these two are based everything else of worth. So obviouly Love of God comes first. I listed love of self as second because we really need to understand this love before we can fulfill the second commandment.

Very true. It is in knowing ourselves that we can better understand how we ought to act toward others.

Before we actually begin our inquiry into the question “who are you?” let us refelct for a few moments on how we answer that question at this point of our lives. Below is response taekn from another thread. You will find six brief description contrasting views of how man can look at life and a person who tries to find some meaning in that life. The responders were asked to rank in order, from the most to the least desirable to live by with a statement of reasons for the choices. For the sake of this discussion, you may want to describe each in a simplified manner or just a kernel thought which helps to characterize a particular way of looking at who we are.

Best: Christian: I find Christ and the Church he formed has created a belief system that if properly followed or at least attempted to be followed would create a better world on Earth as well as a community working to help one another achieve salvation.

Oriental: If by this you mean Buddhist, or Taoist beliefs I suppose they are better than the other choices left with. Of course I have no real understanding of either religion so I cannot go into detail.

Hedonism: I find excessive pleasure seeking to be a horrid way to live, but not worse than those mentioned below.

Individualistic: Can’t comment too much, but looking at a wikipedia it seems to be worst than Hedonism since by how I see it there are no absolute morals to this philosophy.

Nihilistic: From what I gather it seems to replace God with Human ambition and the belief in men who violently structure society in there own image. I think we’ve seen enough of the effect of those kind of men through Hitler, Pol Pot, and other tyrants.

Worst: Communistic: Man was not created like ants; we will never on our own free will work for the ideal that Communism sets. That and its very dogma calls for the eradication of all religions and spirituality.
