Assuming the classical definition of Philosopher as a lover of wisdom, my favorites in order are:

  1. *]Jesus Christ
    *]Socrates
    *]St. John
    *]St. Paul
    *]King David
I list them in the order that they have fostered in me a love of wisdom, or truth.

  1. Great response…:tsktsk: to me for not thinking to put our lord first.

Socrates4Jesus:

Have you ever read any of Peter Kreeft’s material? He’s the one who primarily got me interested in Philosophy as well as Socrates.

No shame in that! A good case could be made that Jesus is not a philosopher, but that which every philosopher seeks. I might be the one deserving of shame for putting him in the list with the others.

😃

No, i’m extremely poorly read! All i recently have time to read are the Bible, Plato’s dialogs, and technical journals related to my profession.

Is there a copy of some of Kreeft’s work on line that i might check out?

How did you manage that character in his first name?!?!

I couldn’t figure out a way of doing it, and frankly I’m jealous.

I went in order - to:

  • Start
  • Programs
  • Accessories
  • System Tools
  • Character Map
  • 10 lines down, & line 3 from the left
It’s pity if you don’t have it somewhere :o

Sure, check out the link As-a-child posted above. Not only will you enjoy his writings I’m sure, but he has many audio files you can download for free and put on your iPod. I believe the site also lists the many books he’s written. I highly recommend them.👍

Thank-you! Now I can write about Søren Kierkegaard,
“The Wørd” and my Olsøn family in-laws without feeling like I’m leaving something out.

And there’s the added bonus that I just think it looks really cøøl. :extrahappy:

🙂 I have the æ, ø and å right here in front of me because I am from Denmark like Søren Kierkegaard… Olson is never spelled with Ø … in Danish its Olsen and in Swedish its Olson…
Anyway … I couldnt help laughing at your post 👍

If you google it, you’ll find that some people do, in fact, spell it like that… not my inlaws though, I’d only be doing it for a laugh with them.

But I’m glad it made you giggle.

Sideline
I stand corrected 🙂 it seems there really are a few called Olsøn… I just never heard that name before whereas the ending “sen” in denmark is extremely common in family names… that is “son” in Swedish and also Norway as far as I know 🙂 but all come from the the word son… like Petersen would in the old times be something like Peter’s-son.

Anyway… Søren Kierkegaard is the cooooolest philosopher.

and by the way… I would never call Jesus a philosopher… that would be a degrading name to call Him in my ears and I would think also in my whole academic environment… a rabbi, my professors might call Him if they prefer academicism over Revelation… an “enlightened master” to the new agers… but the Son of God, and our Lord for all Christians who find their identity in Him 👍

Aquinas, Adler, Aristotle: all the good ones start with A.

Not good, but interesting: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Camus.

Good pagan ones (other than Aristotle): Kuukai (founded Shingon Buddhism), Ramanuja, Zoroaster, Buddha, Plato, Socrates.

Bad ones: Everyone after Descartes and Kant who is not a Scholastic, especially that fideist twit Kierkegaard. No offense.🙂

Also, equal with Aquinas although he’s not a formal philosopher, Chesterton.

In no particular order: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas
