It’s false. There is just overwhelming evidence that at no point in the last 7,000 years has the entirety of the human population (save a very, very select few) been destroyed.

I believe that Noah’s Ark is an allegory, meant to teach us moral lessons. That doesn’t mean that God’s word is not true; it just means that God doesn’t always communicate His truth in the style of Scientific Realism.

Read Tobit - do you think all that stuff really happened? I doubt that the Jews ever considered that story anything other than a fantasy novel - albeit one that teaches a religious truth.

( Now that I have softened you up ) I am surprised that you do not believe in Noah’s Ark. I do not imply you need to justify this to me but I would be interested ( if you would ) to hear why you feel this way, and given that, how you ( or anyone ) would determine the parts that are " allegory " and the parts that are divine inspired by God. ( That seems dangerous to me )

Especially since several civilizations can be shown to have endured well before, during and after the time period during which the supposed flood took place.

I accept the Church as the final interpreter of scripture, as she claims to be. The Church does not insist that I take Genesis literally as a scientific or historical textbook.

One of the things I love about being Catholic is that I don’t have to turn off my brain, deny scientific progress or believe in a young earth.

I do believe that everything in scripture is there because God wanted it to be there. And every part of scripture has important truths to teach. I have been studying and meditating on the Genesis narrative of the creation and the fall for quite a while now. I am currently reading Pope Benedict’s new book about it. I highly recommend it.

I believe!
I think, though, that the flood may not have actually been global.
Not really sure about it either way, actually.
But for some reason I have it in my head that it was a more localized thing, not that it means it wasn’t an extremely large area … just not global.

I have no backing for this thought, but it’s in my head all the same.

The NT writers speak of it as true, also the Gospel writers told of Jesus himself speaking of Noahs Ark as a actual event.

I’ll go with them and say it really happened.

That’s fine. The Catholic Church is perfectly okay with a literal interpretation of Genesis. It’s just not required.

I’m formerly fundamentalist, previously Catholic and now Catholic again. I believe in the flood. But I don’t know if the entire world is defined by our new concept of the world. I saw a Discovery Channel or History Channel documentary on a “maybe” “kind of” “could of been” concept that gave me pause. It tickles me that people refuse to believe that God could have created the world as is. There’s a scripture that states that God has allow a great lie to exist for us to accept in our ignorance…i wonder if it was this sometimes? It makes no difference to me what you beleive as long *** you believe in God and the true faith. Beyond that, good luck. Oh and beleive it or not I have a vast education in the sciences…because I had so many questions left unanswered. It really doesn’t challenge my faith anymore. My brain says god could have made it to look like it is and as far as the great flood is concerned…I’ve seen things that were supposedly impossible. But yet it happened. My own eyes too. Don’t need silly men and women trying to convince me that this argument is meaningful. My worthless 2 cents.

Are you saying that God lies to us - tricks us? In the bible God says that He is a God of truth and cannot lie (cf. Titus 1:2).

Please post that passage of scripture so we can discuss it.

If you knew your bible so well, or how to google you could look it up yourself. I have to recall. And since I’ve read the bible so many times that shouldn’t take long. But its a short simple passage that could easily go unnoticed. I have to think…that is see if I can recall it before I cheat. Getting older with lots on my plates causes my mind to strain these days. I’m so stretched out. My wife’s a convert and can’t even tell her own mother she’s Catholic. That’s pretty sad. But it’s also very stressful. Did you know that stress can actually cause memory loss…even kill brain cells?

No, I’m one of those guys who believes I have to use the brain that God gave me. I think it’s a sacred obligation.

Not being hostile…just joking around. You should know the passage I’m referring to I think, but I could be wrong…I often am. I’m also not so full of pride to fake full knowledge…Not that you are. But you should have just looked it up yourself. A Luheran just pulled this on me and then tried to shut it down. One guy showed that he was Catholic in his profile and turned around and chastised me over something Catholic. So, I’m hanging a little low… I’m a former seminaian and I have had a lot of issues that aren’t proper for this forum. It involves scandals…lots of and caused me to run like hell many years ago out of anger and fear. I read the entire bible once through Old and New Testament while meditating on the meaning. Before Graduation I had read the New Testament at least 3 times with a little more Old Testament. When I met my wife, whose father was a bishop, I had read the bible through several times and so many times through the New Testament I can’t even guess without saying at least 20 times and the Gospels and Epistes so many times its mind boggling…I take my …no the Church’s or God’s written word very seriously… I believe in the ever lasting truth or the great I Am. I love God with my whole heart. Every act is a prayer. But sometimes, I stumble and sometimes I communicate poorly. I use my noggin reall hard too. But I have to do it carefully so as to avoid pompous pride. So I try to work in the realm of humility and humor. It keeps me humble and meak…lowly if you will. I struggle with pride as do many of us. I’m not perfect yet. But I have great hopes of being restored to perfection one day and then we can kicked the can or this passage. I don’t know what it really means but it does make you …me wonder sometimes. But for now I have bigger fish to fry…anti-Catholics .

Hey buddy I am from Louisiana and I find that statement…well rather funny! So which type of Catholic are you? This whole state/personality naming thing with a Catholic suffix could be fun…but back to the topic: does anyone have anything else to say about Noah’s Ark??? I am curious as I got a very different perspective in college from my history prof. I did a report on it. I called it “Rainbow in the Cube”.

Meant to mention, does anyone remember the Tales of Gilgamesh? I believe in Naoh’s Ark. The best logic is that the continents were closer together then and it was a centralized location which actually could have been the beginning of the Atlantic Ocean and may have to do with the spread of different cultures in adaptability to the weather and geographical conditions. Just a thought. Who knows God can do anything, without explanation. It’s things like this that put the struggle in faith bc we cant always produce empirical scientific evidence…only what we believe in our hearts.
