I realize that Ash Wednesday has now passed, but I have a couple of questions regarding the “service” I attended this past week.
Before we started, the priest announced that there would be no Mass. I am a relatively recent convert, so I don’t know if this is a common practice or not. That’s why I say “service”, because I don’t know what else to call it. My main question is about the Blessing of the Ashes. The priest asked all of those gathered to speak the blessing printed in the missalette with him. Is that an approved practice? I realize it is just a sacramental, and that it’s not like he asked us to speak the words of consecration with him, but I am curious about this.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
