I’ve run up against a Jewish lady who is maintaining that the Catholic Church does not teach that Christ was actually born of a virgin. She got the idea from a book by a theologian. The work had an imprimiatur.

It used to mean something but unless you know the bishop is orthodox…it essentially means about diddly squat in modern times.
Pax tecum,

Anyone who is a Bishop or the equivalent of a Bishop.

until she produces the book and you check the source, this means nothing. Any bishop can grant an imprimatur for a work published in his diocese. Catholic doctrine is not established by individual theologians, even doctors of the Church, or by individual bishops, but by the magesterial office of the entire Church.

Pax tecum,
So, to get this straight, any Bishop can give an ‘imprimatur’ to a book, for example, on his own, but there is nothing done outside of that to verify orthodoxy.
