Today at the 7:00 A.M. Mass we had a “reflection” give by a Deacon “wanta be” That is a man who is in the Deaconate program but will not be Ordained a Deacon until next June 2009.
It is my understanding that only a Bishop, Priest or ORDAINED Deacon can preach at a Mass. Is this correct?
I asked the person about his formation and was told that it is part of the Deaconate training program to go out and give a reflection at a local church before they are ordained.
I asked him about Canon law and the Girm stating that only the above can preach at Mass. He had nothing to say except: 1) he was directed to do so by the local Bishop, as part of his training. 2) That is was not a homily, but a “reflection”
I responded that I thought his formation was wrong and that the Bishop can not disregard Canon Law and the Girm. Secondly, you can call it what you like but a skunk by any other name still stinks!
