Who can remember the old forum?

I most definitely didn’t like the change over to this format when it happened. But it seems entirely normal now. I can’t even remember what the old one looked like.

I remember old one, I used to come here before I had a profile.
This version is much better for me.

I can! I was the same as you, I really didn’t like the new CAF at first.

I found an archived capture of the old CAF (I think from @Joe_5859). Made me nostalgic!

Well, thanks for nothing, Lou! Now I remember exactly why I preferred the old version. But I guess we make do with what we have. The discussions are still as lively.

I was not sure I would like the “new CAF” but now I prefer it to the old.

I liked seeing the Latest Threads on the left side of the page.

  • I miss the increased visible Moderation.
  • I miss the functional Ask An Apologist category.
  • I miss the old forum style.
  • I miss the dozens of outstanding posters that have left CAF.

That archived Old CAF home page has the names of many members who are no longer on the forum. Many have since been permanently suspended. 🙁

To be fair, though, the permanent banning is nothing new. On the Old CAF, I sometimes came across 10-year-old threads in search results, and I was astonished at how many past participants had been banned.

I wasn’t here then but I’ve used other forums that still have that format. I like this one much better but it still isn’t the best IMHO. Good enough, though.

I scrolled down and looked at the names of various posters and very few members seem to still be here…at least with the same name! I have heard some old timers remark that they were unable to log in with their old forum names and had to create new ones so that may be part of the reason.

When the switch happened, I ended up locked out and needed the moderators to change my password for me.

I imagine many others simply built new accounts instead of contacting support for help.

I got used to the new format, but I still don’t like it. And I miss all the people that aren’t here anymore after the forum changed like Easter Joy who always gave good advice to people.

I miss the moderators having a sense of humor and handing out judgements without using a canned response.

I remember well on a few occasions having my post edited by the moderator. And the response I got back was “you know exactly what you did. It wasn’t nice, and I will not let it slide next time.”

Now we always get canned replies and no real feedback.

Some tried it and and just found it hard to navigate. Some looked up discourse and didn’t even try it, because they didn’t like what they read. And some just gave up before they even tried.

Do you know why some didn’t just move over?
There were sometimes problems in doing so. I had to start a new account and became a ‘newcomer’ again after totting up a few thousand posts on the old forum. And some simply didn’t like the new format and headed elsewhere. Lost a few ‘internet buddies’ in the process.

@Freddy, did you change over right away or did you wait awhile? I am wondering why so many people had trouble and others didn’t.

I much prefer formats like this one where you don’t have to keep turning pages through the thread. If you are searching for something in the thread you just have to ctrl F once rather than on every page.

I didn’t know there had been an older version but it makes sense. I am on a few forums on Delphi and they changed their format some years ago. I still prefer the old one over there. And my Yahoo account has never equaled the appearance I liked best of the first version I knew of that back in 2002. Sometimes the old ways are still the best. 😀
