I remember (though I used a different name in the Before Time).

There are some things I miss about the old forum. Some features; Some animated smilies

Yep, I resemble that remark. I was TantumErgo on the old forum; joined the second day of its existence. Couldn’t transfer the name though.

I miss not being able to get together in the private groups we used to be able to have. It was nice to just be able to talk/share recipes, or have a group that talked about sports, travel, cleaning hacks or pets. Just small private groups of like minded people who would become friends that you could open up to.

I remember it ,the change over was like being partially blind…very strange. But then bit by bit it became a hub of activity,it seemed people really joined in getting to know one another and helping out 🙂 There was a very good mood that lasted about a year and a half ? But as with everything ,after those aspects were explored then it kind of settled down 🤔

  • I miss the increased visible Moderation.
  • I miss the functional Ask An Apologist category.
  • I miss the old forum style.
  • I miss the dozens of outstanding posters that have left CAF.
Replying point by point:
  • The relatively unobtrusive moderation is an improvement, in my view.
  • Agreed. Definitely. That was what first brought me to CAF, nearly six years ago now.
  • I don’t think it makes a material difference, one way or the other.
  • Yes, but on any website there’s always that kind of constant turnover. There’s not much anyone can do about that.

I have heard some old timers remark that they were unable to log in with their old forum names and had to create new ones so that may be part of the reason.
Several posters on this thread are saying the same thing. I find it frankly mystifying. I just carried on with the same @name, same password, same everything. No hassle at all.

I am one of those who could not log in with my old User ID, even after requesting assistance. Hence the 1 at the end of my current User ID. I too find it mystifying.

I couldn’t log in, so I just created another account, @RandomAlias, and almost forgot about my original one. Many months later, I missed my old name, tried resetting the password, and it worked. (I abandoned the second account.)

It depended on the length of your original password, I think and also if there was a space in the original username.

There are no spaces in user names on this forum.

I couldn’t get in, then I made this user profile. Then I was able to get in after contacting moderation.

The old forum permitted more than one user profiles, as long as you didn’t use them to sock puppet in the same thread.

This one doesn’t, only one profile per member.

So I abandoned the old one.

I bailed out when the change was made to Discourse. It seemed the forums (or is the proper plural of “forum”…“fora”? Any Latin scholars here? But I digress…) at that time were becoming less and less charitable. Several users I followed and liked said they were leaving, and so I did too.

I was gone for about six months and started lurking a bit. Like a moth to a flame, I couldn’t stay away. Tried to log in under my username and couldn’t. Contacted the mods are they re-set my password and here I am.

I miss the more active moderation that we had under the old setup. However, I understand the financial realities of CAF and the reason the moderation had to change. Something I learned just before the change was that many of the moderators were also users and were posting in the threads.

My prayer is that with the U.S. election season ending shortly, many of the most contentious threads will disappear.

Oh, I can log in with my former ID. But with much history lost, I chose to abandon it.

But you were a big part of the lounge when I became a regular … don’t understand why you would talk negatively about it now.
