Who can sing the Exultet?

I myself have had the great pleasure as a lay person to have chanted the exultet twice. The first year I simply omitted the parts reserved for an ordained minster. The second year our pastor was able to chant the portion reserved for an ordained minister and I chanted the rest.

I must say it as an honor to be asked and extrremely humbling at the same time. The exultet is beautiful and what an awesome start to the Easter season.

I have chanted the Exultet twice, too. It is a great honor to be asked to sing it. Our present parish does not have a deacon, and our pastor is likely to give this responsibility to a choir member. Fortunately, we have several men in our choir who could do a great job singing the Exultet. I think that it should be sung only by a man. In the two instances when I sang the it, there was no one else who could do it, otherwise I would have declined.

I have done it the last five years or so and will likely do it again. At some point we might have a deacon or priest who can take over. The sooner the better as far as I am concerned, even though I will appreciate the honor.

By the way, can anyone suggest a source for a good and complete recording of the Exsultet? I can’t read music, and I am in desperate need of a good recording.

I don’t know of any recordings but I will do some research and see what I can find.

Done.

First time I learned it it literally took me hours. I practiced for two months during my commute.
Thanks. Downloading now.

Yes, the Exsultet is at the same time a glorious and humbling experience. It’s no accident that part of it goes

My dearest friends, standing with me in this holy light,
join me in asking God for mercy,
that He may give His unworthy minister
grace to sing His Easter praises.

No accident at all.

Years ago, I had a friend who could sing it perfectly in Latin from memory. He doesn’t know it in English.

PS worst case scenario, if I put it in the iPod, and only use the left earpiece, so that no one will see it, would that make the Proclamation invalid, illicit, both, or something else?

Thanks for finding that link. I am going to go download it now. I was a little embarrased to admit that I didn’t know where to look for a recording. Looking forward to listening to it.

I’ve cantored it myself a few times, but for a while it was very difficult…

I made a mistake in the pronunciation of one of the words (our Mass is in Spanish)…
I accidentally said “oveja” instead of “abeja”. :doh2: Not much difference.

Until you find out that abeja is bee (as in the bee’s wax for the candle) and oveja is sheep.
So I had this mental image of a sheep with wings buzzing around a flower…

Baa…bzzz…baa…bzzz…
😊
Did eventually get the right pronunciation…:extrahappy:

But, all in all, that is my favorite holiday out of the entire year…

Is musical instrument accompaniment permitted for the Exsultet? A reference to the rubrics would be helpful.

This thread is** 4 years old**. Perhaps it might be a better idea to follow the [post=7679580]sticky[/post] and just start a new one. 🤷
