Who can write the verses or incantations for the penitential rite?

My fiance and I are both lyrically oriented and thought it would be nice to write some appropriate for a nuptial mass. Are we allowed to do this as lay people?

I’m afraid I don’t understand.

Are you saying you want to write something equivalent to, “You were sent to heal the contrite. Lord Have Mercy,” as would be used in the third option for the penitential rite?

I was under the impression that such ‘verses’ must be taken from the… lets see. That would probably be from the Sacramentary? Not sure about that one…

The Sacramentary lists a whole slew of options for the Penitential Rite/Kyrie, and all the “verses” you’ve heard should have been taken from there.

Yes, like that.

And that’s precisely why I’m asking, I know they can be found in the sacramentary, but sometimes it seems like the priest “ad libs” it (maybe he just has it memorized) and if it is sung by someone other than the priest (in English or Greek) the “verses” appear in the cantor’s book.

Is it even appropriate for someone other than the priest to sing it? I’ve noticed only one “violation” of the GIRM (lots of EMHCs) at my parish where they have a cantor sing it unless one particular deacon is there.

When the form C of the penitential rite is used, it may be sung by the deacon or a cantor. The trope may be taken from the words in the Sacramentary or may be made up by the priest, deacon or cantor.

Yes, as lay people you can write them, although I see it as the parish priest’s final decision as to what should be used.

The Roman Missal’s Order of Mass of 1975 has: “The priest (or other suitable minister) makes the following or other invocations:”.

In the Latin edition only one invocation is given. The other 7 found in the USA Sacramentary have been made up, as is allowed.

But this does not stop others being created.

The 2002 Roman Missal’s Order of Mass does not yet have an official English translation. But it still allows other invocations to be sung or said by a “priest, or deacon or other minister”. (In Latin it has: “Postea sacerdos, vel diaconus vel alius minister, sequentes, vel alias, invocations cum Kyrie, eleison profert:”)
