On a much lighter note from my last rant 😃

Who did you pick to be your sponsor for Confirmation?

We were told in Catechism that we were not to pick our mother or father. I was picking my brother who was coming home from the Navy. When our Priest asked us indivudually who our sponsor would be, it went like this:

Fr.: Alyssa, who is your sponsor?

Alyssa: Megan ______

Fr: And how is that related to you?

Alyssa: My sister

Fr: Brian, your sponsor?

Brian: David _____

Fr: Relation?

Brian: brother

Fr: Chris, sponsor?

Chris: Amy _____

Fr: Relation?

Chris: sister

Fr: Ok, We’re going to stop here. To all of you who picked your brother or sister, you need to pick someone else. I don’t want anyone in your immediate family as your sponsor.

Eric: Can I choose my grandfather?

Fr: Yes, but if you all come in here and say your grandfather is your sponsor, you’re going to have to change it.

Eric: Well, who can we pick then?

Fr: A cousin, uncle, aunt, godparent, friend, neighbor, teacher, etc

I ended up picking my brother-in-law.

I chose an woman who I met at church. She is now a very dear friend.

The only rule is that it can’t be your parents, so I don’t think it’s OK to be making more restrictions where there aren’t any. I asked my great-grandmother btw =)

I have chosen my beloved sister-in-law or, rather, she chose me LOL. When I told her I wanted to convert she jumped up from her chair and yelled that she wanted to be my sponsor!

(I’ll be starting RCIA in the Fall).

My 7th/8th grade CCD teacher.

When my wife converted before we were married, she picked my Mom.

My best friend’s parents were my sponsors, since they were the only catholic family I knew, and my friend wasn’t confirmed yet.

So, you can pick a brother/sister?

I picked my former Scout master. Actually, when I was originally supposed to be confirmed, 10 years ago, he was my current Scout master and sponsor. He’s also one of my dad’s closest friends, and his sons and I were very close growing up. Though we’ve all kind of gone our separate ways, they all showed up for my confirmation, and we’re talking about getting together soon. But I’m especially grateful to Mr. Harold (my sponsor) as he was gracious enough to be my sponsor again, even with his insanely busy schedule (he’s the mayor of our neighboring city now), and even though it required him to come back early from one of his rare vacations. I felt bad about that and tried to tell him not to worry about it, but he insisted. 🙂

My uncle - and both his sons chose me to be theirs. I ought to call those boys, say hello to them. It’s been a long time since we’ve talked partly because of friction between their mother and my mother (who are sisters and haven’t gotten along in years). Every time I call the boys, their mother answers, goes off on my mother, and I just want to hang up. Then she calls my mother, tells her she just talked with me, then my mother calls me and tells me to stop talking to her sister.

I really can’t wait for those boys to get their own places. Both are graduating from college this summer.

I picked my instructor. I figured she would always be where I needed her to be and I wouldn’t have to bother someone else. She was also the most knowlegable Catholic I had ever met besides Father. :signofcross:

There really isn’t any practicing Catholics on my side of the family. There is just one on my Fiance’s side. His great aunt who is 81.

She’s his sponsor, my sponsor and the Godmother to my daughter.

I chose my friend who helped me learn about Catholicism and invited me to Church.

I don’t think the priest can tell you not to choose a brother or sister. There’s nothing wrong with having a sibling as a sponsor as long as they meet all of the requirements.

I picked a friend that I met when I went to Mass at church. I have no relatives that are Catholic, so I just started going to Mass, just me, myself and I. 🙂 I met a neighbor there and she had a friend who became my friend and I choose her for my sponsor. 🙂 Worked out very well for me, and I will always be grateful, it’s a big responsibility and commitment to attend those weekly meetings with me for an entire 10 months, and neither one of us missed even a single meeting. 🙂
