This thread is for anyone who wishes to post their opinions. In one of the MP3 files from the Bible Christian Society, John speaks that Caferia Catholics are the one who speaks out more against the Catholic Church than Protestants (who are Ex-Catholics).

So who do you encounter in debates more? Caferia Catholics or Protestants?

I find myself more inclined to debate CCs than other.
I have compassion for those who do not know the True Church but very little for those who DO know and choose to ignore it’s teachings.
Also, though, I have found a couple who were poorly catachized, which I consider a minor point because if you love The Church, you never stop learning about it.
That old stand-by word, “journey” comes to mind.

manny, I will talk with anyone who presents to me something to be talked about…

That could be anyone, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim…or free flowing…

But my observations would be that those who claim to be Catholic yet don’t follow Christ’s teachings are waaay more hostile and confrontational.

Almost as if, protestants (and any other denom. christian) are confident in their beliefs. But a catholic practicing birth control definitely has freud’s whole ego/superego/id anxiety going on. They are like ticking time bombs.

I debate luke warm Catholics and fallen away Catholics.

I don’t think I’m very good at it, though.

These forums are helping me, though.

Mannyfit,

I am curious how you can call all Protestants ex-Catholics.

If they were Catholic and then converted to a Protestant faith, or started one themselves that would be a way to describe it - although not the best way. I would say formerly Catholic IMHO
But, if they never were a Catholic they can not be ex-Catholics.
Protestant does not equal ex Catholic.

Maybe you did not mean it that way in your OP but I dont want someone to read that that has been a Protestant all their life to take issue with that.

What is “Protestant Faith?” Is it universal only becuase it rejects Catholicism? What common bond does the “protestant Faith” have between them?

Some things it does not have are" Universal, Apostalic.

It has Baptism and Matrimony but what else?

I debate people of all different faiths, but I tend to debate cafeteria Catholics and non Christians more than Protestants.

I live in a mostly Catholic town, but most of my friends are only Catholic because their parents are and a lot of us have ancestors from traditionally Catholic countries (which for many is why the family stays Catholic). Also, I have a lot of Jewish friends and some atheist/agnostic friends, so that makes things interesting. Plus, my dad is agnostic, so we debate religion a lot.

Most of the Protestants I met consider Catholics as fellow Christians and tend to believe that as long as it brings you to Jesus, it’s OK. My boyfriend and I get into some interesting debates. He’s one of few Protestants I end up debating.

I see mostly Mormons, but that is simply because of my family situation. I have many opportunities to “comment” upon things from a Christian, and specifically Catholic, point of view, but these are not debates. It is Mormons with whom I am most likely to converse, but that is not because of any intention on my part.

From what I understand of Mormans (albeit, limited) they do not see Jesus as divine nor as the Son of God. They have a kind of view that Our Lord is/was somekind of Cosmic figure, something like an ange.

This is certainly not Christian.

Mitt Romney (presidential candidate) had a grandfather that had 18 wives. This is an abomination. Mitt has only “ONE” wife but to have more than that is bigamy/polygamy and is against civil law.

Were it not for politics would he have multiple wives?

Since there is very little difference I really can’t say
They are different.

Protestants pick and choose Biblical verses while Caferia Catholic pick and chooses Catholic beliefs and practices.

I wonder if anyone else have more debates with Caferia Catholics than Protestants.

Well, it happens quite a lot with me, for both of the groups. Quite simply, both groups ignore many of the facts, or see little point in them. It’s sad, too.

I just debated with my brother who is now a lukewarm Catholic. Shameful…I can only pray for him.

I’m sorry for you. I have a friend who is experiencing a similar conflict with her brother. (Have you read The Everlasting Man (G.K. Chesterton)? It helps.)

I personally try my absolute best not to debate either…I am not out to convert someone…but if they wish to discuss how God has made a difference in their lives…how their life is better…how their heart is more tender and their speech more compassionate…how their days are brighter and their nights warmer. Doctrine matters little to me…“doctrine” is not eternal “Truth” it is simply a finite construct to explain the Truth which is beyond words…Holy Mystery that is God.

I have found that many good Protestants and Catholics who are very well versed in their beliefs and history…but lack kindness, compassion and tend to be very argumentative…wanting to debate crossing “t’s” and dotting “i’s”…I tend to shy away from the more confrontational and rude “debaters”.

I am happy to discuss my faith with anyone and to explain as well as I can and why we believe what we do. I have found that for most Protestants, their idea of what we do or believe as Catholics has been told to them by people who have only hate for the Catholic Church. I tell them if they want to know about the Catholic Church to ask an informed Catholic to get it right the first time. I was asked if we are the true Church, why is it attacked so much. The best answer to that question is that the wolf does not attack the false sheep.

My personal experience has been Protestant and Muslim. CAF gives me the tools to do just that!👍

I would like to talk more with those who have sincere hearts. Partially because I don’t know how to handle those who might upset me by talking mean toward my belief; ie. I don’t want to lose my temper.
