In John 4:1-42, my Grandma entered in a discussion approaching John’s Gospel from Genesis, with the Story and Account of Creation. We had then continued on Saint Peter’s role in the Church. Wherefore God set His eyes to make him head of the Church by the Chief Cornerstone (who made Saint Peter: Upon this rock I shall build my Church.) Because, when the Apostle’s were asked what people say that who Jesus was, they had many answers. But, when He asked, “Who do you say that I am?” They all fell silent, except one man: Saint Peter, “You are Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

The Apostle’s were called to carry out the history of Salvation wherefore the people of God were losing it. Fading to the pagan world around them. Sacrificing Salvation for the world. The compromise between the Pharisee’s and Sadducee’s led to letting go of the need for the Salvation of souls. Our Lady, in Fatima appeared to shepherding children. Through that she showed them the vision of hell where poor sinners go because no one prays for them. Jesus went by a well. Wherefore sometime after a woman came by with a jar. He then asked if she could get him some water to drink. She was shocked as He was Jewish. He then told her that He had water to give. He proceeded to describe the water that never ceases. Which then Christ said to get her husband. She then explained there is no husband. Wherefore He told she was right, she had 5, and the one she was with, wasn’t. Jesus stayed in the land of Samaria as the women went about relating everything He knew about her. Then they came to believe from hearing Him themselves. And so announced He was the Savior of the world.

Who do you say Christ is?

Edit: Jesus means God Who saves (because He came to save His people.) And Immanuel means God with us. Mary had these two special graces (highly favored, full of grace.) For the Angel said, the Lord is with you (i.e. Immanuel.) And Mary said “God my savior” (the Angel not only said to name Him Jesus, but as well as Mary transcribed the name on her living soul. For Jesus means God my/the Savior - God Who saves.) Remember, before she even said: “be it done onto me according to your world”, the Angel attributed/described to Mary as being “full of grace”, “highly favored”, and the “Lord is with you.” So she was already attributed as the Church states, the Immaculate Conception (as the Angel endorsed/described.)

Christ is my Redeemer and my Saviour. He is my Shepherd, and will never fail to be there in good AND bad times of my life.
 
Mary said, “God my Savior” after she conceived Jesus. She said, “God has done good things for me.” Elizabeth stated,“How is it the mother of my Lord” should visit her. But yet, before Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit, the child Jesus, the Angel announced the Lord was with her (i…e Jesus - God with us.) Because Mary is with us (i.e. the whole host of the human race and mankind.) Thus, the Lord (Jesus) was already with her. God was with her. The child took the name: God with us, because God was with her. God posted that to her. She said to the Angel, “Be it done onto me, according to your word.”

She is the bearer of Salvation. She is the bearer of God (Theotokos.) God was with her all the time. For the Angel told her so.

Thank you. I was trying to fix that typo. I have been dealing with watery eyes today - speaking of water 😉 So was hard for me to fix when typing. Thank you for catching that.
 
The Samaritan woman at the well really exemplifies Jesus as a rebel for social justice, in his day, and an advocate for women in first century Middle East.
 
He offered the water that never ceases. Do you know any social justice programs that offer that?
 
He was talking of eternal life. God set that social justice program up and kicked the devils arse in doing so, by Jesus defeating death.

The social justice was for the woman’s Salvation. His “rebellion” would had been because the Sadducee’s didn’t believe in sin. And the Pharisee’s, though they believe in sin, didn’t want to do anything about saving souls from them.

Jesus recounted the woman’s life, but with one caveat. He said, the Jewish people know what they worship (i.e. the Ten Commandments.) And that the Samaritan’s do not. The “social justice” lacking was for the Salvation of souls. Hence why once He directly spoke to the people in Samaria, they said He was the Savior of the world (i.e. saving people from their sins.)

Do you understand anything of firstly how women stood at that time

And secondly

Why the Samaritan woman was stunned Jesus spoke to her.

That act, of Jesus talking to her would be the equivalent say in India of a highest caste born person going into and eating out of the same bowl , as the lowest class - the untouchables.

It was an incredibly rebellious and statement making act

Another of this kind that Jesus did was to heal an aged woman on the sabbath, who had been afflicted of an illness for 12 years.

And he touched her too. She would have been an untouchable female outcast from society.

Jesus was a true rebel for social justice.
 
I think it was the fact she was a Samaritan. In the Gospel, she stated he was a Jew. Had nothing to do with him being a man. And her being a woman. In fact, she had 5 husbands. Now, was with another man, who was not her husband. Nothing in that passage illustrates her being a woman versus Jesus being a man. Even more so, He continued to speak to the people of Samaria (men and women.) There was nothing even center in the Gospel about her state in life how she was treated as a woman.

Then again, take account of Herod’s wife. How woman were treated? He offered Saint John the Baptist’s head for her daughter to dance for him. Then again, what about Pontius Pilate’s wife? She instructed, from a dream, not to deal with this man named Jesus (because of a terrible dream she had.) Or what about Anna the prophet working with Simeon? I don’t think all women were poorly or ill treated. But there were injustices done to women. For even the Prophet Daniel saw this, when men were trying to lustfully get a woman to satisfy their sexual desires. But she refused. And so they accused her. Daniel proved they lied. And guess what? The men were punished, not the woman. The woman found in adultery. Jesus wasn’t letting either her nor the man off of their sins. He, however, wasn’t going to have her stoned to death. Why? Because her soul (i.e. her Salvation) was more importance in saving her than to end being dead, possibly un- repentant, dead in her sins, and possibly going down into fire of everlasting hell - which could happen (which ties to Mary’s message in Fatima in praying for poor souls.)

Jesus did confront men who abused justice and authority, no doubt. Most interestingly, the women in the Gospel had more courage than men. Mary, His Mother, stayed by Him through thick and thin. Mary Magdalene cried at the feet of Christ, wiping His feet before a Pharisee: Do you know what sort of woman she is? Women were way more courageous than men. Through the entire Gospel. Most men were fearful and afraid. Jesus put the yoke on men to be men of God; to be Holy men for the Salvation of Souls.

Right. He healed because the Sabbath is the day God took rest. Something the people of God could retain, were instructed to rest and not labor. To keep the day Holy. Jesus did keep the Sabbath, Holy. Because, you never tire the works of Salvation. He heals to restore. The Sabbath was being mis-used for laziness. And Jesus wasn’t going to have it.

In those days Jews did not mix with Samaritans,
Men and women not related did not speak to each other or interact.
And women were very second class in a patriarchal society.
So you had Jesus doing 2 things

Well 3 actually

A Jew talking to a Samaritan
A strange man talking to a strange woman
Jesus revealed he was the Messiah, that everyone was waiting for, to a foreign, alien. Woman.

We don’t take the Bible without considering the cultural and political setting.

For instance the setting each of the Gospels was written.

Let’s forget the sexual innuendo, and look at the cultural setting. To really understand the layers being written about.

Herod had to honour that promise because he had made it in front of many influential people, Herod did not offer the head of John the Baptist. He said he would give her anything she asked for if she danced. Even half his kingdom.

After she danced she said she wanted johns head . He was cornered .

That was about much more then healing on the sabbath. Jesus touched lepers too. Also untouchable outcasts.

Social justice
 
As far as Pontius Pilate, if he had listened to his wife, he would have freed Jesus. After all he had the final say.

I believe the eastern churches have made Pontius Pilate and his wife Saints.

The Magdalene was not a prostitute. She was a member of a wealthy coastal family. And gave it all up to follow Jesus.

There is a new movie coming out about her. I can’t wait to see it.
 
And yet, under that Patriarchal system, you have the books of Ruth and Judith. Of course other women in the Old Testament like Naomi. And, can men under a patriarchal system fall into injustice? Sure. Name a system that does not? But did God stop with the system of the Jewish people? No. He never stopped the words of the Prophets and the Patriarchs of faith (i.e. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.) Never discontinued the Ten Commandments. For He came to fulfill the commandments, not to take them down. The love God has for woman was the same token of relationship Joseph had for Mary and Jesus. Why Joseph was “a righteous man.” He was going to divorce her quietly (whilst they were betrothed - married.) Because, he didn’t want anything to happen to her. Saint Peter took care of his motheri-in-law too. Saint John the Apostle stayed with Mary, Our Lady.

I don’t think every man treated woman unjust back in those hay days. In fact, consider the Ethiopian Eunuch that Saint Phillip encountered?

So going back to Samaria, if woman were ill treated? how is it this Samaritan woman had five husbands? And now with a man who was not her husband? She had more freedom than the woman found in adultery? No? So Samaritan women were more ably to do things that were forbade in the Ten Commandments. Hence, why Jesus stated, “We know who we worship.” And why her people do not. But He did not say that in a snide remark. He stated a true poignant fact. He really didn’t have to say anything for the guilt of the lady to process. For He was Jewish. he wasn’t breaking oaths or laws (i.e. the Ten Commandments.) She knew it. He pressed that she dug further looking into her own life. For that is why He said go get your husband (obviously knowing she didn’t have any, and was with a man who wasn’t.)

Jesus came to save souls from their sins, not encourage them to continue in them. He broke through the “stay away” from the Samaritan’s who were considered outcast Jews. And so He came to rekindle the lost prospects of Salvation, which they lost. They worshiped, but they did not know “Who.” The commandments were lost. And He came to save them. And restore them to the people of Samaria, out of love; out of mercy; out of justice.

Under law Joseph had the right to stone Mary to death. Joseph chose not to.

I have not, at any stage , mentioned or drawn a parallel between the patriarchal society and the rights and position of women with ill treatment or abuse.

Please don’t do that.

This is a conversation about the layers we can peel back in each story in the Gospels.

We must ask…what exactly was Jesus doing with this act. How many layers do we have to peel and understand.

The more we peel, the more we have to understand.
