We have a Catholic priest who uses TBOM in his services, so don’t act so high and mighty that even you can’t benefit from TBOM - not Mormonism - big difference.

.
I want his name, his diocese and his parish. I would like to speak with him as to why he uses the BOM.

Actually Paul, we have very specific details of where Book of Mormon events took place at www.bookofmormongeography.info
and in fact, we identify the place where our Lord descended in a cloud of angels and glory, that any with discernment can go and experience for themselves. Check it out Paul.

.
I’ve been to your site several times now and have not been able to find where you p(name removed by moderator)oint the location where Jesus descended in a cloud of glory. That site is very poorly designed and I’m not going to wade through dozens of pages of sanctimonious anti-Christian preaching to find one thing.

Can you please provide us with the exact link to the location where Jesus descended?

Thanks.

I keep hearing that particular “Mormon myth” from several people…I’ve only heard a preacher use the Book of Mormon from a non-Mormon pulpit once.

He had invited the Mormon missionaries to visit his service one Sunday, and being (as they all are) young and naive, they accepted. Unfortunately they were transferred out of the district the day before the service, and my companion and I were transferred IN. This was back in the early 70’s, we were in England, and we were unable to contact the preacher to let him know the change in missionaries. So, rather than simply not show up, my companion and I came early to the service in hopes that we could catch the minister, let him know of the change, and see if the invitation was still open.

We were met at the doors by an older lady who seemed a little surprised to see us, but was pleasant–she assured us that it was perfectly fine for us to be there; in fact, we had seats reserved for us.

Well, the young men who had been invited were 19 and 20 respectively, fairly new–but my companion and I were not. I was 23, my companion was 29, She was about 5 foot nothing and perhaps weighed 95 pounds. I was taller, but still very obviously female; not the strapping, handsome 6’ something guys that had been invited to the service—and both of us had been ‘in the mission field’ for awhile; we were getting a little nervous.

We were shown to a couple of chairs at the front and slightly to the side of the chapel: great seats, actually; we could see the preacher better than anybody else, and we could also see the entire congregation–which of course meant that everybody in the congregation could see US, too; we were definitely on display.

We asked our greeter if we could see the minister to explain the situation, but she said not to worry about it; she would tell him. I think…she didn’t like him or something, considering how things turned out.

At any rate, the service began nicely; the sermon was about respect, the golden rule–my companion and I began to relax; surely THIS topic wouldn’t be a problem, right?

Wrong…

About ten minutes into it, he was getting wound up. Mind you, although he COULD see us from where he stood, he was very careful not to look in our direction; for the sake of drama, I suppose. He picked up the bible, and spoke about the Golden rule and the gospel of Christ. We were enjoying his speaking style very much. Then he started talking about devils who believed, and false prophets, and wolves in sheep’s clothing…Sister Branson and I looked at each other–and for the nearest door. No matter where we looked, we were going to have to go through dozens of people to get out.

The preacher then picked up his copy of the Book of Mormon. He was really wound up now—waving it around like a fire brand, using it as a gavel, pounding it on the pulpit, shouting about how the devil Mormons were in the city, young and well favored to catch the attention of the young and innocent girls so that they could spirit them away to Utah to be “whores and harlots for the unholy beasts of the earth” who would not allow them to leave their homes, or be with their families…

It was fascinating; there he was, all caught up in his hellfire and damnation condemnation of the evil Mormon missionary men, and there we were, a couple of very modestly dressed girls who were obviously not fitting his description–and there was the congregation, looking somewhat confused and not getting into the spirit of the thing the way the preacher thought they should.

At any rate, he was running on his own juice. He picked up the Book of Mormon (considerably the worse for wear by now) FINALLY turned to look at us and literally threw the book at us. Sis. Branson caught it rather neatly. We stood up, and in the very thundering silence, said “thank you for the kind invitation to your service, sir, and thank you for returning our book.” We left the room.

I understand that this particular preacher never lived that down. I don’t actually know, of course, because after Sis. Branson and I got home, and could stop laughing, we called the District leader, and we were moved out of that area that day. I THINK that they put a middle aged couple in there instead. I do know that they were still talking about it six months later when I went home.

ANYway, that’s my story of how one preacher used the Book of Mormon in a sermon. Don’t think that’s what BMOC had in mind, though. 🙂
