What was it like? Are you glad you did it? Would you do it
again? What made you want to give it up in the first place?
What did you do instead when you really wanted to go on CAF?
I am now wondering if some didn’t come back, but of course
they won’t be reading this.

I should have (and thought about it), but unfortunately I didn’t. It is possible to get too much of a good thing! Any time spent on the internet can become habit-forming.

I gave up political chat at other sites, but because work was so slow, I couldn’t give up this forum, for I would’ve gone nuts with boredom.

Yup. I gave it up. Lapsed 3 times (2x were on Sundays so maybe that doesn’t count?). I needed to give it up. And at this point, I have come back much more judiciously – as I did after giving it up for Lent last year. I was, um, having to confess this . . .

I got a lot of other good stuff done!

If it’s not too much trouble, I’d really like to know about some
of the other good stuff you got done. I want to see if any of them
are things that CAF keeps me from doing.

I wrote two articles and caught up with administrative/formation work for the Confraternity of Penitents and managed my daily responsibilities better – including getting in more time for meditative & contemplative prayer.

I did. I give up all the computer except for checking the weather and checking my email (which doesn’t take long) and on an occasional Sunday I did a quick check of CAF and did some quick searches on a list kept by the computer (things to remebr to look up on Sunday!).

I got more sleep, which is important. I had more time to keep up with laundry and dishes, and was able to do that and the other chores in less of a rush. I also had more time for devotional reading. Also I read outloud with my son a lot more, and took time to watch his favorite show with him rather than be doing my own thing on the computer.

Its also a busy time of year so cutting that out helped.

Yep - gave it up for the entire season of lent. At first I really missed it and wondered how my favorite posters were doing and this is the strangest thing… when I would sit down at the computer to go to another site - my fingers would automatically type www.catholic.com - like on auto pilot or something?!

But after awhile, I no longer missed it. I cleaned my house more - had time to read - especially the newspaper - in general I just had alot more free time. This is what I do think though - giving up CA did NOT make me a more spiritual person - in fact, I think the opposite would eventually happen. I am encouraged by the posters here - I learn something every single day and I think I’m a better Catholic because of CA, so I don’t think I’d give it up again.

My husband thinks I should give up running for our next lent. Now THAT would be the hugest sacrifice possible because it’s what I love more than almost anything - not sure I could do it. I’m glad I have a whole year to think/pray about it.
