I’m not sure I have right thinking here.
I know that noone comes to the Father except through Jesus.
I mean, Jesus ‘descended to the dead’ (not Hell) to preach to those souls that came before him and to open the Gates of Heaven to them.
So they made it to the Father … through Jesus.
I’m also thinking that the only unforgivable sin is to decidedly turn your back on God.
Isn’t this was Hell is … the absence of God?
Satan chose to turn his back on God and was banished from Him.
Is it possible that a person that is invincibly ignorant of Christ, even today, that they might still go to Purgatory?
I’m thinking that it is here that they will be taught the ‘truth’, before entering heaven.
As Catholics, we believe that we go to hell if, when we die, we have mortal sin.
However, we are not culpable of a sin if we do not know it is a sin.
This is unlike our civil laws.
I believe that Catholics have the fullness of the truth and better know what is actually a sin and therefore we have more responsibility (culpability).
I think this person would go to Purgatory and, through Jesus, get to the Father.
I think the only people that go to Hell are those that know the truth and decidedly turn their back on it.
In effect, they choose to separate themselves from God.
They choose hell.
I think all others will go to Purgatory and that a part of the ‘process’ is learning who Jesus, then on to heaven.

I think that a protestant or non-Christian that doesn’t go to mass on Sunday is not responsible for that sin because they don’t KNOW that it is a sin.
