Hello.

It seems that in order for Catholics to believe that humans have souls, we basically have to believe one of the following:
  1. The Creation story, which goes against most scientific evidence.
  2. That at some point along the continuum of evolution, some humanoids were suddenly vested with souls, which seems arbitrary.
  3. That at some point along the continuum of evolution, some soulless parents gave birth to at least one child with a soul, which also seems arbitrary.
  4. That because of evolution, there never was and never will be a distinct “humanity” that had a soul distinctive from other animals, and therefore potentially any living creature has just as much of a “soul” as we do, from bacteria to dolphins and orangutans.
Thanks for your consideration.

Mike
