It seems that in order for Catholics to believe that humans have souls, we basically have to believe one of the following:
- The Creation story, which goes against most scientific evidence.
- That at some point along the continuum of evolution, some humanoids were suddenly vested with souls, which seems arbitrary.
- That at some point along the continuum of evolution, some soulless parents gave birth to at least one child with a soul, which also seems arbitrary.
- That because of evolution, there never was and never will be a distinct “humanity” that had a soul distinctive from other animals, and therefore potentially any living creature has just as much of a “soul” as we do, from bacteria to dolphins and orangutans.
