Who interprets what is a "serious reason" to miss mass?

I generally ask myself “Would I call in sick from work today?” If the answer is yes, then I feel I am sick enough to miss Mass. If not, I go. When in doubt, you can ask a priest about it in confession, and see what he says.

Ultimately I think that is up to God.

At most, our job is to interpret God’s will to the best of our ability. Part of that is to learn and understanding the teachings of the Faith, for within that are generations of study, not our 3 minute’s of contemplation.

I don’t think Adam and Eve really expected what happened to them. They trusted Satan when he said surely you will not die. Believing it was ok really did not help them much though.​

I will ask you this however. What is your God? What is more important to you than the Sunday Eucharist?​

My step children spent the weekend with their father’s family (their grandfather is a preacher, but not anti-catholic). Did they sin since we did not drive 4 hrs to take them to mass (did we sin by not taking them) - they had no ability to get to mass themselves and their father’s family did not take them as we had asked… I don’t know, but they will be at confession next week - it is perfectly OK to confess venial sins too. I think they wanted to make mass but were unable - that is very different than if they did not want to and avoided to make an effort.
