Who is being converted to Catholicism

Ok,

We had a poll about who was nabbing the Catholics, I thought what about a poll on who is the Catholics nabbing from those who aren’t Catholic?!

This has been very interesting for me as in the last few years I’ve been heaps of ppl who have convetered from the ultral fundamentalism to Catholicism and some of these stories are just blowing me away!

Here in Australia I thought after the incident of the former Arch Bishop of Adelaide, from the Church of England, who publicly forced to retire, that many Anglicans would convert to Catholicism. Also I would have thought that many other Anglicans converted due to the highly controversial Gay bishops and priests and ordaining women priests!

But this is all just speculation and I’m interested in seeing what others think, who are being nabbed by the Catholics?
 
In my RCIA group we had 2 mormons, 3 non-doms, 2 baptized Catholics who’d never practiced and 5 mainstream prots. One of the mormons dropped out. All the others went on to baptism (if necessary), confirmation and 1st Eucharist. An interesting mix.
 
The media likes to focus on some high profile conversions that might lead to people to think all of the folks coming into the church are pale, stale and male.

But in looking at the stats and my own experinece I am amazed by two things.

One, an aweful lot of adult baptisms. At one time it seemed a safe guess most people were baptized in some denomination. But it seems a lot folks with no relgious or Christian background are coming to the faith.

Second, our converts are quite diverse, even disportionately minority. Whites are now a minority within the Catholic church in the USA. We have been bringing in African Americans right and left. My own parish has several Hispanic converts (previously Protestant or unbaptized), and many immigrants not raised Catholic.
 
I think you are clearly overstating your case. I believe Hispanics make up about 25% of Catholics in the United States.

Sounds like these may be children of baby-boomers. Many boomers who came of age in the 60’s turned away from Christianity often in favor of Eastern or New Age beliefs and never had their kids baptised. But, that’s just speculation on my part.
 
I think the hope is to lure as many people in who aren’t already Christians.

I converted to Catholicism this past Easter. I was baptized in The First Church of God. I attended this church for 7 years. I then attended the Penecostal Church for 8 months. I became very dissatisfied with the Health and Wealth gospel and stopped going to church for 3 years. I became interested in the Catholic Church through EWTN. I read the Catechism of the C.C. and many books including the Early Fathers. I realized that I could no longer remain a Prostestant. I love the Catholic Church and I feel at peace knowing that I have come home. God Bless

This was addressed in several threads that I recall. Try doing a search on “main line Protestant denominations” or “main line Protestant” or similar. There is some fuzziness but it includes Methodists, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and a few others.
 
Convert from Fundamentalist Methodism here!

Methodists do have the best hymns ya know. 😉
Especially after singing that poo we sang last Sunday in mass, everything was written in the 70’s, yuck.
Got out my good ol’ Cokesburry when we got home, good hymn,s baby, good hymns.
 
Hi, first time here. I will give you some insight as to what kind of people are converting to Catholicism: my own case.🙂

I was born in 1973 and I remember my dad taking me to church occasionally; I have vague recollections only. Of course I had no idea of what it was all about. I then drifted away from the church for about 15-20 yrs and in Dec. 2002, I had a life changing experience and I started going to Mass every Sunday, giving thanks to God for saving me. I then started to develop an interest in everything religious. While I actually did not convert, I can say that I went back to the Catholic Church after being absent for many years.

I’m currently in RCIA & will receive the sacraments of initiation in March 2005. Most of the people there in RCIA are people that drifted away and there are also some ex-Lutheran
and other Protestants.

I’m so happy to read stories such as yours, where we once were lost and now are found! 🙂

Roble, they call people like you and me “reverts” for having reverted back to the faith. I’m so happy that after my many years outside, that the Holy Spirit led me home such that I now have access to the fullness of the truth.

Hello 👋 I think you are correct ! I have seen a lot of this…not due so much to Eastern or New Age beliefs so much as a lack of real committment to the church. As a secretary at my Church it was quite common to see folks seeking baptism for their babies when they had not attended mass, in many cases, since they had been married. If they were even married !! There was usually a kind of " just in case" mentality with no intentions of any real participation in the Church later.This was unacceptable to our priest and when he would require attendence at mass for several months or a short instruction course on the meaning of Baptism etc. their were always those who just forgot the entire issue of baptism.

hmmm…isn’t there a WHY did you convert thread lurking somewhere too? I thought I saw one, but maybe that was back in the summer. I would be interested to know in the why of everyone’s conversion to Catholicsm but I could swear that’s been done before.
 
I honestly believe that no religions are being converted, as we are now taught that one religions is as good as another, with Fatima now open to desecration
