Who has been and is in charge of the Catholic Church now that the Pope has died? Is there someone like the U.S. Vice President who is available to make decisions?
During an interregnum (Latin, “between reigns”), the day-to-day business of the Church is administered by the cardinal *camerlengo *(i.e., chamberlain), who is currently Eduardo Cardinal Martinez Somalo. Anything that is not necessary to the immediate administration of the Church is postponed until a new pope is elected.
