I saw a cartoon once that had the Rolling Stones logo - the lips - and there were dentures falling out.

Mike Dye:
Anyone old enough to remember a song that came about the time the Beatles released “I wanna hold your hand”. It was called “Needles And Pins” by I believe a group called the “Searchers”?
QUOTE]

Yes indeed, the Searchers did “Needles And Pins”. Did you know it was written by Sonny Bono???

I didn’t have the Paul McCartney conversation with a young person, but I did have a co-worker ask me who Lee Harvey Oswald was. I felt old.

I was in a record store the other day and I overheard two young girls (about 15 or so, I would guess) who were at the “new releases” rack. One of them picked up McCartney’s new CD and asked (in all seriousness as far as I could tell) “Who’s Paul McCartney?” I was stunned (and feeling very old!)

I know she was very young and all, but is this possible?? Is there anyone on this forum who doesn’t know, or has heard the same thing?

(For those who do know, please lets not give the answer too soon so more can respond)
A few years ago I was driving a couple of my son’s rock bandmates, 15-year-olds, to the music store to get strings for their guitars, and “Hey Jude” came on the radio. One of them said to the other in all seriousness, “Who’s that, Elton John?” The other one replied scornfully, “No, that’s the BEATLES!” So there are some young people out there who are well versed in classic rock. 😃

Hey, I can’t wait til Friday night…I have tickets to see Paul McCartney. woohoo.

I’ve got a good one for you all: my fiance, 28 w/ a master’s degree, can’t even tell you who fought in the revolutionary war, civil war, or WWII. I’m a huge history buff, so it makes for some interesting conversations.

Anyway, worked with a younger guy once who was wondering why we were talking about the City of Chicago during a music discussion (you get it, right?).
Any chance your fiance is a graduate of a “Catholic school?”

I went to a Catholic School and I know who fought in all those wars… Grrrr.

That Gish person I had never heard of. I guess she was an actress huh? That whole post was like a different language to me.

I like to make fun of my husband because he watches those VH1 shows about the Awesome 80s and stuff and alot of those bands I never heard of. I was born in 78. I listened to the Beatles and REM through the entire 80’s. I always say to him “You know the words to this lame song?” “I hope YOU didn’t dress that way”

I was on vacation about a year ago at Walt Disney World. In Epcot (in case you are not familiar), part of the park is made up of representations of different countries. The United Kingdom section has a pavillion where a band called “The British Invasion” plays. As you might guess from the name they dress and play songs from that era with like 95% being Beatles songs. They only play about 5 songs or so ~ each hour. So we are listening and a group of 3-4 young people are standing nearby…I’d guess about 15-17 years old at most. I can’t help but hear their conversation when near the end one says (I am somewhat paraphrasing), “These songs are pretty good. Disney should think about having them record and released for the general public because I’d bet people would like this kind of music.” And no they were not being funny or making a joke! I think they thought Disney came up with this “act” and the songs just like they developed the Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Carribbean! 😉

Deep Purple? Da Da Da… Da Da Dada… Da Da Da____DADA…“Smoke on the Water”… the 1st three chords you learn in electric guitar lessons (or DID learn in my day…)

I’m somewhat proud of the fact that my kids know what a turntable is! (a '68 Thorens full manual w/ Kirksite platter and Shure Type IV cartridge) , and (with consent) play my old vinyl… (even my 1/2 speed virgin vinyl direct from Master stuff!) through the ancient Macintosh tube (TUBES!) pre-amp & amps I’ve kept alive.

I caught the 'Stones last fall on their tour at Soldier Field in Chicago. The whole ordeal was a time trip… including a 36 hour “road-trip” back & forth from Minneapolis to attend. At 60+ these guys STILL put on one helluva show!

My daughter is heavy into music, and it makes me feel good that she’s “into” some of the stuff I loved at her age… Journey, Wilson Pickett, Boston, Kansas, Foreigner, Steve Miller, Stevie Ray Vaughn (I was at his last concert in WI !), the 'Stones, Jimi, 38 Special, ZZ Top…

These bands PLAYED music. Had instruments in hand.

This’ll dispel any “urban myths”… Have some fun with your local fast-food teen cashier.
All’s you need is two $1’s, a $2 bill, and a .50c piece. Then go to McD’s and order a #6 (dbl. cheeseburger meal). Comes to about $4.25.

Be prepared for the fraud & counterfeiting charges to start! 😃

I’m 30 and supposed to be too young to care about Paul McCartney. Thankfully my 40-yr-old brother, also supposed to be too young to care much, was Beatles obsessed and it rubbed off. People who care about good music will ALWAYS find out who McCartney and Hendrix are. Those poor girls just don’t have a clue! 🙂

That’s when you scream HERETIC and burn them at the stake right then and there!
I think it’s interesting to think of the things my baby, currently 7 months in utero, will not be at all familiar with. The Beatles may be one of those things!
THAT’S YOUR JOB!! Of all the things you have to teach your children about, that should be in the top 10!! Who needs potty training?!?! Teach her first about Strawberry Fields!
My favorite Simpsons moment is when Homer asks in all seriousness, “Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?”

Which reminds me of another one when he is trying on glasses and the shopkeeper says the frames he has on are the Yoko Ono model and Homer say, “Oh please, she ruined the Plastic Ono Band.”
The Simpsons has got to be the best written show of all times. There are so many things that are just pure genius.

Actually, this is a great opportunity to re-examine just how timeless the sixites sacred-cow music really is. Otherwise we are in danger of becoming self-parody: Idolatrous worship of youth while the *real *youth have moved on. Or, in another Simpsons moment when Bart exclaims, “Nobody cares about your dinosaur bands dad!” 🙂

I’m going to put a plug in her for my dd’s dad’s Beatles Band www.thecavernbeat.com. They are excellent. My dd is 2, but her dad has made sure that she knows who the Beatles are (she does) by taking her to gigs, playing their cds and dvds, he even bought her copies of their cartoons. She has a tshirt (Target sells baby and toddler Beatles shirts this season). She can even sing about 10 -15 Beatle songs (She KNOW ALL THE WORDS to Til There Was You). Oh, and he also happens to be the Paul guy (sounds like him and plays a left-handed '63 reissue Hofner like him, but doesn’t look like him)

Okay, let’s be fair. People are usually familiar with the culture of their own generation, not of previous ones. How many of you know just offhand who Lillian Gish was? Or can name any movie Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd was in? Or know what songs Rudy Vallee recorded? Have you seen Birth of a Nation or Greed?
Who are they? I never heard of any of those people? Are Birth of a Nation and Greed bands? I know the band Creed.

I know who the Beatles were, and also a few songs that their members did as solo artists. However, I only know the “hits”. I friend of mine who is in his late 40’s asked me to sing karaoke with him to a song called “Penny Lane”. I said I can’t sing this, I never heard of it! Also, I heard of Paul McCartney and Wings songs, but what has Paul McCartney done as a solo artist (without the Beatles or Wings)?

Five years ago, a college graduate asked me “Who’s Jimmy Carter?”
Thisisgong back several years but used to own a bookstore and I’ll never forget when a teenaged girl came in looking for books about Watergate because they were studying it in History.
That was probably one of my first “Oh, my God , I’m getting old.” moments. How could something I watched live on TV when I was in high school now be history?

I ask the same question, but it more of a denial mode of self preservation. Before I developed it, every time I heard of ol’ Jimmy I’d start to have a panic attack.
“Because of the greatness of the Shah, Iran is an island of stability in one
of the more troubled areas of the world.”
- Jimmy Carter, 1977

stayed a virgin.’”
- Lillian Carter
