Jesus drove seven demons out of her, and then she followed Jesus with great love in her soul. She was there at the cross. She has been called the apostle of the apostles, because, going to the tomb of Jesus early in the morning, she was the first to know Jesus had risen, going and telling the apostles of this. The story of her encounter of Jesus at the tomb, shows her immense\ love for Jesus, and is the reason why she is seen as patron of the contemplative life.

And there is no evidence that she was either a prostitute, Mary of Bethany, the woman caught in adultery or the sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet, pious beliefs notwithstanding.

And of course Pope Francis has raised her commemoration to a full feast, rather than a mere memorial . I will be very interested to know whether it is celebrated as a feast in people’s parishes this year (Gloria sung etc.).
