A columnist(?) named Sandro Magister (the last name means “teacher” in Latin) writes for the Italian newspaper(?) “L’espresso.” He also has a web page the English version of which is at www.http://www.chiesa.espressonline.it/index.jsp?eng=y

He has written some really excellent articles about Pope John Paul II (whom he refers to as “Pope Wojtyla”, by the way for some reason) and the Conclave and our new “baby” Pope Benedict XVI, “Sweet 16.”

To my somewhat educated way of thinking he is extremely knowledgeable and respectful and I have have seen him referred to as the “acknowledgeed expert” on the Vatican.

And he seems to know inside information. I have another article from him which refers to one of the younger papabili as “ambitious and hyperactive” and which questions the appointment of one of the recent U.S. Cardinals because of past criticisms and for ambition, citing an 11th century quote from St. Peter Damien: “The avidity of those who aspire to the bishop’s tassels must be opposed.”

Does anyone know anything further about him?
