Who is the Destroyer?

I read about him in Corinthians…

1 Corinthians 10:10 Never complain; some of them complained, and they were killed by the Destroyer.

He also appears in Wisdom…

Wisdom 18:25 From these the Destroyer recoiled, he was afraid of these. This one experience of Retribution was enough.

He appears more in the Old Testament but who is he?

Thanks.

I’m not a theologian but I seem to recall from my protestant upbringing that “The Destroyer” was the Angel of Death. I believe he was also mentioned in the Passover scripture. Again, this is all from memory. I am sure there will posts of greater depth than what I have just listed.
I would be curious to read those, as well.

This seems most probable. The destroyer is one of the angels whose duty is to rain down retribution on certain persons.

But it also seems plausible that it might be a fallen angel whom God has allowed free reign over certain individuals when they they essentially hand themselves over to the evil by their
impenitent behavior. This seems less likely.

Anyways, it’s best to steer clear of him.

Jesus did say that the father of lies comes to steal, kill, and destroy.

The Angel of Death.

If you read all of Wisdom 18 you will see references to the killing of the first born in Egypt.
