Who is "the rock", Peter or Jesus?

I was having a conversation with my fellow protestant and he told me that “the rock” on which the Church is built is Jesus, and Peter is “the rock” as long as he lives in obedience and faith before God because that is how Jesus lives in him like he lives in Paul (Gal 2,20).
How to approach that?
