Who loves anime here?

Yes, I know what happens in the end. Then again, the author is notorious for that kind of thing. I tend to avoid his work unless I really want a glimpse of humanity’s darker pits and there’s nothing else available at the moment.

Meh, if you want a book that delves into humanity’s darker pits, watch or read the FullMetal Alchemist manga (or the Brotherhood anime) if you haven’t seen it already. Otherwise, watch or read Naoki Urusawa’s Monster, 20th Century Boys or the Berserk manga. Warning though, Berserk is dark, very dark but it has a really idealistic message, the characters are all great especially Guts and the story is very well constructed and like 20th Century Boys, despite being cynical has an idealistic message. I mean, just look at this panel where Guts and Casca rescue what is taught to be their own child after he stumbles and falls.

Also, speaking of Berserk, I just found this really, really cute picture of Cardcaptor Sakura cosplaying as Guts. Oh my gosh, look at it!

Wanderer before I set off with the intention of not coming back here for a few weeeks I like to reassure you personally you don’t have to feel guilty for not having told me the ending.Shock though it was I can use such sordidness as leverage in how to detct bad amnga or anime.

I’ll leave with this.If you like the contrast of shojo and shounen in that cardcaptor cosplay what do you think about (imo) the blending of the two in* Escaflowne*?.

LW, do read Berserk it is very, very great; not only one of the greatest manga ever but one of the greatest fantasies period. I will warn you that it does include rape as one of it’s main themes it is so prevalent. Another warning is that contrary to popular opinion, I find the first 3 volumes to be as good as the rest except for one thing: the art. It’s far from bad as it’s actually good but the art in the first 3 volumes is very diffirent form what it is now. Guts looks diffirent, the art can be rather off model and it was pretty average. Today, Berserk has some of the greatest art ever. I mean, the scenes in the manga are just amazing to look at.

Guts is also really, really badass. He can swing his sword ebtween his teeth!

Guts is also really, really badass. Lets see: whats more badass than Guts riding on Zodd through a lightning mini-god? ABSOLUTELY BLOODY NOTHING!!! The scene is ev more gob smackingly awesome is you read the manga, especially as it comes after what is probably one of the greatest fights I have ever seen of all time. It’s really no secret on here that I am not overly fond of this genre, however, I am trying (albeit not very hard) to see the appeal of this style of cartoons. I tried a few months ago and never really figured out what all the fuss was about. I am going to give it another try. This time, I am looking only for works done by the ‘‘King of Anime’’ himself; Steve Blum. I have seen many of his American animated works like; G.I Joe Resolute, the Green Goblin in Spectacular Spiderman, and pretty much all of his portrations of Wolverine.I really enjoy his work and find almost everything he does entertaining. Some of you may have heard of his Guinness World record award for the most video game voice-overs ever. Well over two hundred. I understand that he has also done very many anime voices as well, so I thought maybe If he is in it I might watch it. Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Any suggestions?:cool:

In this case, I would have to recommend Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, as he provides the voices of the main characters (and does a great job to boot, not to mention those are great shows). Some others he’s in that I recommend are Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Trigun, Planetes, Blood+, and The Twelve Kingdoms, in that order.

Except that those are not anime.

They are great cartoons and I loved SS, but anime is made in Japan.

I am going to suggest an older series, GaoGaiGar, which is a similar superhero setting. You might be able to find excerpts on YouTube.

You’re looking at the wrong place as anime isn’t about voice acting or explicitly about style, it’s about story. Whenever I watch anime or read a book or comic book, the first thing I look at is the story and how its told. Now lots of anime and manga have great art and animation like Berserk, FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Sword of the Stranger, Rurouni Kenshin, 20th Centry Boys, etc… and all are great stories to boot. Anime have a lot of tropes typical to their genre not typically found in western works. What anime did you see anyway? Have you seen Rurouni Kenshin? Its utterly clean and hasn’t the slightest bit of anything I’d consider sinful or objectional (except THAT rude joke in episode 66 but that wasn’t dirty, it was funny!). You should try shorter anime like Elfen Lied, Baccano, Madoka Magica or Sword of the Stranger, or start with the masterpiece of masterpieces that is FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Or if you’re a more romantic type, try Clannad, Toradora and Kanon. Or if you’re more into philosophy or action, try Rurouni Kenshin, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop or Berserk. Or if you’re more into mystery, try Monster. Or if you’re the comedic type, try Full Metal Panic. Trust me, it’s gut bustingly hilarious.

Anyway, in my opinion, if an anime is made purely for the style with a story tht has little substance, it’s going to fail. Look at the first Batman film. This review pretty much says it all: blip.tv/hack-the-movi3s/hack-the-movi3s-batman-1989-and-why-it-sucks-3942261 This is why I don’t like Tim Burton’s films; they’re all style and no substance. Yes, that includes Nigthmare Before Christmas as the characters ther were really underdeveloped.
 
I used to really enjoy it, but I grew tired of the constant cutesy/moe/fanservice garbage that was produced season after season.

Plus I started getting into other hobbies more.

But there are two series that I continue to follow (in the manga) - One Piece and History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi.

Kenichi is a great series. They just reached the 500th chapter this week.

I’m not here solely for style as you might have thought. I just thought that since I like Steve Blum and that he has done many anime works, I’d ask which ones he has done are good. I’m using something I already like to try to get into something which I am unfamiliar with.

Yeah, 20th Century Boys is the greatest work of fiction of the decade, together with FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Berserk.

Oh I knowwwww, I’ve been following it for years, ever since I discovered the anime. It was a great chapter too, a lot of build up for the next few ones.
