Who loves anime here?

Say guys, I see a lot of debate on whether the 2003 FullMetal Alchemist anime or the Brotherhood one are better. What do you guys think? I plan on watching the 2003 anime as I’ve ehard a lot of good stuff about it like it’s lack of reliance on fight scenes and what not.
 
Tonight, I inexplicably an episode of A Certain Magical Index.

Not that it was a bad experience, mind you, but I still didn’t expect to be watching it today.

It’s an interesting with good characters. Nice balance of drama and comedy. Fanservice is present, but not excessive.

Admittedly, the whole romance with a nun thing is a little awkward, but it’s anime Catholicism/Christianity.

I don’t see how it can even be considered a debate. If you’ve already finished Brotherhood, I think watching the 2003 version now will be pretty disappointing. I was fortunate enough to watch them the other way around, so back when I saw the “first” one I actually liked it but it’s not even the real story of Fullmetal Alchemist. After the beginning it just turns into one big filler that has nothing to do with the manga. So yeah go ahead and watch it but don’t get your hopes up too much.

I haven’t watched it, but I’ve heard many good things about it.

That and maybe A Certain Magical Index are what I’d like to get over the next month or so.
 
Say guys, I don’t have any idea what anime I want to watch right now. I feel like I want to watch something extraordinary, great, thought provoking but one that isn’t so utterly dark like Berserk. I’m thinking something neither too long nor too short, something similiar to FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Heres my own anime list: myanimelist.net/animelist/philipmarie. I know this is asking a bit too much but can anyone recommend something I could buy on DVD for Christmas?
 
Have you already seen Aa! Megami-sama? Nice for Christmas viewing.

gaoGaiGar isn’t too long or too violent. I think we got both from ebay or Amazon.

Maybe, but I was thinking more of looking at Steins Gate, something completely diffirent you know. Do you know where I can actually buy a DVD box set of the anime? Also, without giving away anything at all and not revealing the nature of the ending, does it end properly or does go the route of Berserk, Elfen Lied, Rurouni Kenshin, Kenichi etc… in that it doesn’t end properly? Please tell me.
 
Say guys, I need to say this because it’s making me all nostaligic and sad. You may not have ehard of it but when I was a kid and well into my teens, I used to read two comic books called the Dandy and the Beano. You’ve ehard of Dennis the Menace UK, the kid with the Spiky black hair and the red and black striped jersey but you’ve probably never heard of the Dandy. I LOVED the Dandy. I loved it more than the Beano. It’s the sole reason I am so into comic books instead of normal literature although I still love it. While the Beano is OK, the Dandy, has finally ended. Thats right, on December 4 they punblished it’s last ever issue. However, I’m not dissapointed. I’m glad they went all out and put in a lot of dedication in it. It’s a massive 100 page issue which even guest stars PAUL MCCARTNEY. I am dead serious. It makes me so sad and nostaligic you know. All those times laughing with the Cowboy Desperate Dan who is one of my most favorite characters, my beloved Beryl the Peril, Korky the Cat, Blinky, Black Bob, Bananaman, Ollie the Skateboarder etc… Sigh! I used to have so much fun reading them and I still have every. single. issue. of the comic book I have ever bought. And don’t get me started on the funsize Dandy, the annuals, the activity books… Groan! I’m making a tribute video set to komm susser todd and the credits of Berserk tommorow! Stay tuned!

I’m a 28 M raised Catholic and I’m very into anime. I agree, you have to be very careful about what shows you choose to watch.

Several of those sites will give you ratings which you can take at face value.

128 tv series, 28 ova series (basically mini series) , 33 Movies, 2,579 Total Episodes, Estimated Days: 44

There have been PLENTY of series I have had to abandon after under 60 seconds of the first episode.

Rurouni Kenshin is personally in my top 10 list. The tv series ran for 90+ episodes that spanned over 6 different story arc’s from the original manga novel. There were a handful of episodes (around 15-20) that contained questionable content centered around action etc. Compared to US tv shows today I don’t feel this series even comes close to crossing the morality borders that US shows have begun crossing in the past 10+ years. The main thing that drew me to this show was the central theme of the main character realizing the errors surrounding his position he chose to take in a war and the complete life changes he makes and carries out.

I’m currently watching

Psycho-Pass - (My main interest is centered on how we need to learn to prevent our society from becoming too dependent on increasing technology to control our lives as well as surrendering certain aspects of our free will to artificial intelligence that is portrayed as being an all knowing, unwavering source of rules to follow to achieve happiness for society as a whole.)

**Kingdom **- Somewhat accurate portrayal of historical events during the Chinese provinces around the time of the Qin Dynasty’s downfall… Before China became united to the extent that they are today.

**No.6 **- Another series that has many psychological interests that interests me. Purely based on the fact of how certain individuals in power believe they can provide an utopia for select individuals while suppressing the rights of those that they choose at random based on their refusal to blindly follow dictator’s beliefs.

**Jormungand_ Perfect Order **- Another personal study of how individuals can rationalize dealing in arms trade as well as choosing to perform somewhat acts of selflessness believing an act of kindness can absolve them of their sins when those individuals have no inclination of taking responsibility for their immoral actions including the chance of ever repenting for those sins.

Sword Art Online - A reminder to myself of how society is chosing to escape reality by immersing themselves in a virtual world (currently known as MMORPGS; aka World Of Warcraft, Final Fantasy online, Everquest, Eve Online, etc.) These games require massive amounts of time to progress to any point in the game where gameplay becomes enjoyable.

**Bleach **- (A finished tv series) - Which is a good reminder that true evil does exist in the world and if you aren’t vigilant you can very easily succumb to the temptations which the mainstream media today portrays as “the human dream / way to happiness” The series mainly displays this as the search for obtaining psychical powers. In today’s world it is money, high levels of management in companies through any means of obtaining those positions.

Berserk-

Another over the top series that is a shocking reminder that true evil does exist in the world. Off the top of my head there are around 25 episodes to this series and there were around 3+ that were too graphic for any person of upstanding morals to watch.

There are many more I’m currently watching however I doubt anyone is interested in reading a novel. = )

Dude, Rurouni Kenshin is my most favorite anime of all time. The only bit of questionable content it ever ahd was in episode 66 where Kaoru dreams that Kenshin proposes to her and afterwards it is implied (read: obvious) that she dreamt of her and Kenshin having sex. But thats it really and it’s pretty mild compared to other shows. Just ecause a show has action doesn’t make it immoral at all. In fact, shows like FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhoood have a lot of action but use it to show how our heroes are struggling. You should watch that show, it’s one of the best.

Berserk only had 25 episodes because of poor writing. I don’ta know how someone who is moral is going to refuse reading the Berserk manga simply because of the questionable content. Berserk does have sex but of the really horryfying speciality, i.e. rape. And it does NOT take it lightly. Rape of males by other males played for laughs/ Nope. Romantacized abuse? Nope. Rape by divine people is OK? Of course not. The main character was abused as a child, at least in the manga. It’s not dirty so much as its highly disturbing and sad and Berserk did make me a little depressed but unlike Evangelion (which had an utterly hopeless and nihilistic message), Berserk actually gave me a positive message which is to live life for life itself and never give up. It’s one of my most favorite manga ever and I love it.
 
Right now, I’m reading the Fruits Basket manga and I’m liking it more than the anime. It’s not extraordinary like FMABrotherhood or Naoki Urasawa’s works but it certainly is much above average and out of all the shojo I’ve seen, it’s the cleanest, most fun and sweet.

The bad stuff first though: without a doubt, the biggest flaw in the manga is not Tohru for being a Mary Sue (in this case, it’s actually a good thing. See below), it’s not the story which is good. Its not the art which while just OK is rather charming admittedly. It’s the editing. The manga really has some editing problems. Sometimes it relies too much on overly long panels to tell the story and other times, the speech balloons are placed so badly it’s hard to tell who is talking. It also has a problem using narrative devices. At one time in volume 6, the mangaka actually draws an arrow showing that we’re entering into a flashback. It feels so out of place you know. Why can’t the flashback be shown in the way Watchmen did it for example (and no, I’m not comparing Fruits Basket to Watchmen. I mean come on. I’m not dumb or so ‘sophisticated’ to do that) where the flashbacks started on seperate pages? Said flashback didn’t even need to bea flashback becuase it only flashbacked to an event that happened like 5 minutes before! Also, Miss Natsuki Takaya: please out your special blah blah blah at the end or beginning of your chapters and not in the middle of them. Please? Thanks.

Story wise, the gay jokes are rather distracting and some of the joeks can be pretty dirty for a shojo manga (really Ayame, you had to say you’re offering yourself as a sex slave to the students in front of the teachers simply to not let anyone else be punished? Thats, sick and somehow awesome at the same time seeing as he was not serious). Ayame himself is pretty annoying, at least at first. I’ve only read the first 6 volumes so far though so who knows.

One thing I noticed is that the manga is a whole diffirent experience altogether if you read it like how a book should be read, that is, on paper and not on the internet. I read manga on the ent all the time but I love reading it on paper you know. Fruits Basket is MUCH easier on the eyes if you read it normally.

The good stuff now: the characters are really good. I care about them enough I want to find out what happens to them and Tohru herself is a good character. She’s a Mary Sue yes but in this story and it’s enviroment, it was necessary.

In all, if you want a good shojo , this is it. Its better than most of the shojo I tried reading like Vampire Knight or “shudder” Black Bird and instead of being bad or lukewarm, it’s actually above average in my opinion.
 
Just saw the first episode of Vision of Escaflowne. What do you guys think of the series? As a first episode, it was really good. For the 90’s, the animation is excellent although I don’t like how the faces of the characters except in the opening and endings look like they were drawn by the same guy who animated Trigun, the setup interesting and really well done and over all, it was interesting. I want more.
 
That’s amusing… I didn’t like the character design either.

Seems as if all the shows I like are old, or go on forever: Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Dragonball Z, Prince of Tennis.

For some odd reason, it seems to me that not too many people even know Escaflowne here. 🤷

BTW have you guys heard about Kuroko’s Basketball-related dojinshi being cancelled in the upcoming Comiket? Very nasty that one.

I saw the americanized-version of Escaflowne that aired on the WB??? forever ago (maybe around 1999), and loved it. But I think it didn’t follow exactly how the original Escaflowne series was. I still need to watch it myself.

And yes, I heard about all the cancellations. It seems some crazy guy/gal is sending threat letters with powdered and liquid substances. 😦
