Count Cain/Godchild is my absolute FAVORITE series, period. Like, EVER. I love it. I love the Victorian Gothic feel, I love the art style, and I love the characters. My favorite is Jezabel, the main characters half brother. He starts out the series as the villain, and quite through-and-through evil, but as the series progresses, you see more and more of how much that evilness is just madness, desperation, and sickness. He’s a heartbreaking character.
I know right? I saw those hoods on pictures of Hoyl Wekk processions in Spain and in fact, one of the characters in the book I’m writing is a Priest who wears such a hood all the time because he is horribly disfigured due to some disease. I like the third one clockwise fwhose ‘beak’ resembles that worn on the costume of doctors who took care of plague victims in the past.

For the series overall, it’s a great mystery, and a wonderful look at the effects of child abuse. Both Cain and Jezabel were abused by their father, horrifically, and both react so differently. Cain had someone to save him, but Jezabel didn’t, and the way he clings to his abusive father is really sad.
Additionalyl, I like how Kaori Yuki handled the biggest issue with this genre; dark girls comics tend to be heeeavily steeped in Homoerotica. CLAMP’s series do this, Yoko matsushitas…if it’s a comic for girls, and has a male lead, there always tends to be sooome level of it. However, with Count Cain, unlike others, you’re not getting it shoved in your face, andher way of handling this genre hallmark is different. Every “pairing” that the fandom likes to tote is really ambiguous, and in light of the characters trauma and psychosis, is really about something that far transcends a simplistic answer of “OMG they’re totally lovers omg!” Take, again, Jezabel, and the man who helped save him, Cassian.They’re a very very popular pairing within the fandom, but really, Cassian is more a father to Jezabel than anything, someone who cared for him and wanted to save him. The fact that Kaori Yuki presented those characters in a way that could be interperated however you wished to see it is rather rare in the genre.
In fact, I find it almost ironic within the genre that the most blatantly homosexual character is a rapist, a pedophile, and a general wretch of society.
I don’t want to sound like 'm focusing so heavily on this topic, but if you’ve read any of the other series in this genre (X, Tokyo Babylon, Yami no Matsuei, Vassalord, etc) you’d understand what a big deal this is.

Uuuguu, Coutn Cain sounds really good! I know that yuri isn’t exactly pornography and to be perfectly honest, I love dark stories ALOT. In my opinion, as long as nudity and even sex is represented for the sake of art and not porn like in hentai, and whether its represented as being bad gien the context or left open to the reader’s interpretation, I don’t mind at all. Hlel, I don’t want to read a song of ice and fire for some long widned speech on the evil’s of pre-marital sex although the sex there is rather pornographic though.…You seem to misunderstand the meaning of Yuri and Boys Love. They are genres to themselves. Yuri is PORN, honey. Straight up PORN. a series with female homoerotic elements is NOT Yuri. The series I listed aren’t Boys Love; they are shoujo, mystery and drama, but somtimes contain elements that can be seen as having homosexual undertones. In a Boys Love series, the FOCUS of the story is the romance. Trust me, years ago, I use to read them. A lot.
With Count Cain, there are no love scenes. There’s no kissing. The most romantic or sexual scenes are all between men and women. With Count Cain, the homosexual undertones so prevelant in girls manga is presented as Cain being so deeply dependent to his butler, Riff, who saved him from his father when Cain was 12. Riff swears he’d do anything for Cain, even follow him to the Hell Cain seems intent on damning himself too. In one scene, Riff wraps a towel around Cain after he gets out of the bath. Because of how close they are, many fans, being girls, like to pair them up, but speaking purpely by canon proof, they aren’t. In fact, with these two, and with Jezabel and Cassian, I find it Kinda bland to simply assume that closeness=lovers. Sure, some people choose to see it that way, but I find it almost a disservice to the deep connection the characters have to simply assume that since they’re important to each other, they must be lovers.
If you were to take a series like X, however, you would be right. It’s much closer to being a true Boys Love. The sexual tension is thick, and there is at least one canon, confirmed pairing that ends in disaster.
So, my review; if you don’t mind a couple chapter pictures with semi-nudity, and a few passing remarks that make little difference in a 15 volume series, it shouldn’t be enough to bother you. It’s a series I kept after purging my collection of things that were overly homoerotic, because the few instances it touches on the subject are vague, open to interpretation, and make little impact on the story in whole.

Nothing shown, nothing lauded as good or any overly sexual displays, but the insinuation that Cassandra has, or plans to, take advantage of Jezabel, who is desperate to do whatever his abusive father asks. This is the level of implication you can expect, but it’s rare. I merely brought it up because it’s sort of present to some degree in all series in this genre. Rather like how almost all war time stories will have violence and gore? but some handle it fine, and others glorify it.
Its perfectly OK, I love listening to people talk about fiction and how its written I really do. I talk about how anime should be written all the time as proven by my posts

Well to be perfectly honest I;m writing two and I plan to get them published and earn lots of cash $-D. One is sort of a warm up which I only recently made up. It is a fantasy story about a superhero who despite having no powers (like Batman) is very strong and agile and he saves a lot of people. The thing is, he is very, very cruel towards criminals, torturing them to get information and willing to shoot the dog to get what he wants. In the end, he still is a good guy but his techniques bring paranoia and fear throughout his town and country and it brings a huge toll on his family and friends. But then he discovers where his missing wife who is also a faerie has been all this time…
And then there is the book which the last one ‘builds up’ to. I plan on making this books my magnum opus because it means a lot to me. Its about the Blessed Virgin’s struggle to save the world from tis moral decay and bring it to God and joining her are a Priest who despite loving her intensely doubts that she loves him, a girl who is having difficulty accepting her [Mary] as her mother and two sisters who are members of a rich freemasonic family and their conflict with their family. The book focuses mainly on Basil the Priest and his and Mary’s efforts to save the world but other forces are working against them: Satan with his jealousy towards Mary, everybody with their stubbornness and pride, and something else that I don’t want to mention for the sake of spoilers.
The book is a deconstruction of Catholicism and particularly the Blessed Virgin Mary. What if Catholicism was real? We would stop pretending it wasn’t and bloody show that God and Mary exist. What type of person would give up his whole life in order to please Mary? Is the Church a force of good? Read: yes, but some of its actions, even good ones had bad effects on people. What person is God really? He may love humanity but why would he allow people to got to hell? Finally, why is Mary so important to Catholics? Why did she appear in Fatima? How will she save the world? Does Utopia justify the means?
And no, the books are not for kids. Especially not the one with the Blessed Virgin. Both contain very mature themes like murder, loss of faith, doubt, self loathing, rape, sexual urges, loss of love, depression, huge disappointments, etc… I wouldn’t read them if you’re feleing depressed. There will be some political intrigue in them although not much. Many Catholic prophecies talk about a great Catholic monarch who is suppsoed to bring the world back from its decay. I say screw that and the three days off darkness, I’m going to show that this great monarch isn’t sog reat and depict him as a dirty jerk who is obsessed with power and who disgusts the Pope and everyone around him.
Its also going to be very strange in its narrative; its something nobody has ever done before. Normal, earthly characters like Basil and the girls constantly talk to the Blessed Virgin who in the narrative appears as if she is really there so that when you’re reading the book and a character is praying in0universe, you don’t see him kneeling down and talking, you see Mary’s reactions and his reactions simultanously. You’re not reading about a man praying, you’d be reading about the prayer doing its job. In the end, the ultimate moral of the story is that both Mary and us need each other. We can’t survive without the other and we need to support one another and the characters, especially Basil learn that the hard way. In the end, I don’t want it to be a bad ending like some ultra-traditionalist Catholics want it to be. I’m ultra-traditionalist too but isn’t waiting for God to perform three days of darkness during which all the nemeis of the Church are killed cowardly? Aren’t you giving up on life? Worse, aren’t you giving up on the Blessed Virgin? She promised us that she will truimph so lets use her mercy and not be moronic sitting ducks waiting for a prophecy that will enver be fullfilled.
I want my book to change the world. I’m sorry to be so crude and I mean it when I say crude I want people to be shocked and flabbergasted at how my book gives a huge middle finger towards all their anti-catholic fantasies. What wrong with a Priest being depicted as heroic? Whats wrong with Mary our Mother trying to protect them and pointing out to them why their lfiestyle is wrong? If people won’t read my book just because its story revovles around our characters struggling through hell and back to save the world from its moral decay, I’ll tell them to read my other book and watch their reaction after reading about all the horrors e main character commits. That would be the funniest thing I’d ever see
The three days of darkness are not going to happen because the Blessed Virgin will make sure they won’t happenInteresting…
But the Three days of darkness from what I’ve read, are in the context of Apocalypse, after the three years of the Antichrist reign. So I think it makes sense, is like a wiping of the Antichrist and his minions.
