Who loves anime here?

As someone who draws and sketches almost constantly I am slightly more interested in the artwork, so if any of you want to make up a list of your favorite depictions of anime or manga I will probably look them up. Maybe I’ll actually gain some appreciation for this art style. And if anyone is really curious i can recommend some of my favorite artists. If anybody is interested.

Anime with great art and animation eh?

Cowboy Bebop is very well animated, especially the movie and episode 20. Haruhi Suzumiya is very, VERY well animated with it’s subtle facial expressions and very small details. Any adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin is going to have excellent artwork. Berserk, the manga that is, has very, very detailed artwork. You’ll be blown away by how good it is. The End of Evangelion is well animated in it’s own twisted way. I also really love the artwork in FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Death Note, as also Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica.

Currently am reading the Kenshin manga. It’s very, very good, as good as the anime.

Celticcatholic, anime is appealing not so much because of it’s art style so much as the deep stories it has. Most anime as has been said, has an actual plot and characters. I don’t mind the bishonen look at all; in fact, as a guy, I don’t even notice at all. The men just look slightly feminine but they don’t act feminine at all. Hell, Kenshin Himura is probably the most bishie character around and he’s the most awesome one as well:

Anime just needs a great story to be appreciated. I actually love the anime art style and contrary to what you think, it really isn’t that pervasive. You will not notice the stylles you watch a good anime, I gurantee it. Check out Rurouni Kenshin, Elfen Lied, FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Death Note to start out. Kenshin, especially the Shishio arc is jsut a mastterpeice all around… except the episodes (witha few exceptions) after episode 63 which don’t follow the manga story at all and are just filler. If you want a short but very good anime, watch Elfen Lied, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop or Clannad. All are below 50 episodes with Clannad being the longest. Maybe you could even get experienced enough to watch masterpieces like Rurouni Kenshin, Higurashi or Monster.

Okay-I have a confession to make. I haven’t been on here in so many months with me meeting someone on Christian Mingle and falling in love and the relationship not lasting-this happened all on July 28. I am also trying to get ready to go on a 6-month deployment to Dover AFB to deal with our fallen comrades and just trying to do the best I can as a single mom and staying strong. Okay-my 18-yr-old son, Alek and I have been watching a lot of Naruta and a little of Bleach. We also saw the movie called Spirit Away-an anime movie about a girl whose parents were turned into pigs, and how she fought and worked to try to get her parents back. The reason they were turned into pigs was because they ate the food that was supposed to go to the spirits. The girl worked for the spirits, and earned their respect in the end. It was sort of an anime movie. I am starting to get hooked big time on anime-are there any other 40-something year olds here on this forum who are anime fans? I have found the whole anime thing quite fascinating. I was in Japan last year for 2 weeks and wasn’t really into anime at all at that time other than recognizing Pokomon (Picachu) and Hello Kitties. The local flea market here in Ladson (SC) also has anime and Japanese stuff. Anyways, I am back and hope to correspond more in the future on this. Take care folks.

Welcome to the thread. I’m not 40 something but I am nearing 30 and I have been watching anime since I was a kid. Spirited Away is a very good movie. The people who produced the movie Studio Ghibli is like Japan’s Disney. So if you are looking into getting into Anime I suggest watching movies first and watching Ghibli movies is a good start. My recommended titles would be Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Whisper of the Heart (my favorite Ghibli movie), Kiki’s Delivery Service, Grave of the Fireflies, Arriety and Ponyo. Then move on to Mamoru Hosoda’s movies Summer Wars and The Girl of Leapt Through Time (both of which you can certainly watch with your son). If you are looking for more mature themed movies watch Satoshi Kon’s movies starting with Tokyo Godfathers then Millennium Actress, Paprika and Perfect Blue. Starting with movies are a good idea since more budget is involved and movies age well. As with anime series, like modern media 80% of anime tv series are fluff and recommendations for that will be saved for another time.

You do not know true frustration at a mangaka until you try and read Berserk.

Togashi (HxH) and Miura (Berserk) are pros at taking long breaks between chapters. Speaking of which anybody here following Vinland Saga? I’m glad that the Farmland Saga arc is now over and Thorfinn has now sprung back to action.

I know I haven’t been commenting lately, but here I am again.

I did finish Soul Eater, which I am not sure how to review. I am glad that they brought back the original ending theme for the last episode, though.

I have also watched Nyarko-san, Gosick, and Ookami-san. Nyarko-san turned out to be hilarious Cthulhu Mythos parody. Hastur is probably my favorite character. Gosick was beautiful; how often can you do a decent shift from mystery series to love story? Ookami-san was also funny and charming, but the narrator talked over the characters too much, and the show definitely needs a second season.

I’ve been watching a few different anime lately: Monster, Welcome to the NHK, and Durarara!! Monster has been compelling so far but kind of slow, like Death Note. Welcome to the NHK can be difficult to watch, but still compelling for some reason. Durarara!! is one of the coolest things I have ever watched; I think I have a soft spot for Shizuo and Celty.

I’m probably going to check out most of the stuff JesuOtaku listed as her favorite anime because we seem to have similar tastes, although I don’t think I have the same antipathy for moe that she does. I’m not so sure about Baccano!, though. It’s the spiritual predecessor to Durarara!!, but it sounds awfully violent, and I’m not sure that it has a point.

Last point this time around: Grrr, Netflix does not have CLANNAD, only After Story! Why???

I don’t LOVE anime. There are actually very few anime series that I’ve watched and enjoyed.

The ones that I have enjoyed are as follows:

Akira (whacked out movie but I loved it. The music, the atmosphere, the images… they really captured me)

Prince of Tennis anime series (lots of fun! Despite being completely fantastic)

Hana Yori Dango A shoujo anime series. Loved it. Went out and bought the entire manga series as well. The universal problem of bullying is explored, as well as romance.

Rorouni Kenshin AH! This series!!! I’ve never seen the manga but the anime blew me away. Love. It.

Cowboy Bebop The original Firefly. Great, great, funny show.

Trigun Also very, very funny. Loved it right until the end episodes. I just didn’t enjoy the end that much.

Death Note The live action film. I haven’t seen the anime or the manga but I loved the live action film.

Wolf’s Rain AH! Such a sad story all the way through. The music in this one drew me in and kept me captive.

Planetes Sci-Fi fun. I didn’t manage to finish it but loved what I saw of the first few episodes.

Argento Soma This story is wonderful. I was hooked from the first episode. I’ve heard it compared to Neon Evangelion… whatever. But as I’ve never seen that show I wasn’t bogged down. I was able to just enjoy the show as it is.

And that’s my list. I’m probably missing something? Somewhere? But it’s been awhile since I paid much attention to anime so that’s not surprising.

There is plenty of anime out there that doesn’t delve into magic. It just seems people get introduced to the magicy stuff and write off anime completely.

Angel sanctuary deals with incest while Count Cain, from what I’ve read has a rather unlikeable protagonist. Ayashi no ceres was just horrible with one of the worst main character I have ever come across and an even worse idiot plot. It’s the epitome of wasted potential.

Fruits Basket was at least tolerable and I have yet to read the manga but man oh man, does the editing departnment need help.

Currently am reading the Berserk manga. I’m dropping the anime because I ehar the manga is better and frankly, it is even though I only read the first chapter (which is very long for a manga first chapter honestly at 224 pages although I’m not saying it’s a abd thing).

I’m a guy and i enjoy shoujo once in a while. Card Captor Sakura, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Tweeny Witches, Rayearth and Escaflowne come to my mind regarding shoujo. fantasy/magical girl. Kimi ni Todoke and Kaichou wa Maid-sama! for romance shoujo’s.

I do prefer Josei more though. Recently i’ve been enjoying Chihayafuru, Jellyfish Princess, Sakamichi no Apollon and Usagi Drop Of course there’s also the more popular ones Nodame Cantabile and Honey and Clover.

I think you’ll be able to enjoy the Josei titles i’ve mentioned.

…you guys are stereotyping Shoujo. Shoujo is NOT a genre. it’s a demographic. ALL that shoujo means is that it’s geared to girls. Yes, you have frilly frufru shoujo like Cardcaptor Sakura, but series like Godchild, X, and Angel Sanctuary are also shoujo, and they’re much darker, more action or drama driven, less about sappy love stories.

My Sylvester; I still bring you an offer to discuss Count Cain indepth if you ever read it. If you do, I suggest you take a look at it like this: CC is not about good vs evil. it’ doesn’t have a shining good guy hero and disgusting villain; both sides are equally broken, because, the theme of the story is how hate, revenge, sin and jealousy warp and twist your soul.

If you’re wanting a clean cut, good vs evil series, completely free from anything challenging in the way of morals and society, then don’t read it. But if that’s what you’re looking for, then I see we just don’t really have similair tastes…I mean, come on. You said Ceres was "filthy: and unnaceptable because it didn’t outright condemn a characters pregnancy. Morally questionable material? maybe. But I think you’ll find very few series are free of all imperfections. of course, you shouldnt read something that you find personally offensive, or tactless, but another person may easily find something great in it. I’m sure many people read CC and put it down after a couple chapters due to the violence or the way main character gets away with so much immorality at first, but as someone who’s read clear through it several times, I’ll say; the message it conveys in the end, mooore than makes up for it. This was a series that drove me to explore my faith further, not to ention deal with the abuse I suffered as a child. But, perhaps it won’t be for you. That’s fine. But, you shouldn’t dismiss it before you try it!

Also, Is it rally either appropriate or nice on any forum, let alone a Catholic one, to say something is “?" I’m sorry, but as someone who’s read several of the series mentioned as "”, I’m a little hurt : /

Some of the other shoujo you listed WERE mentioned.

All I know is I’m more likely to enjoy a shonen manga then a shoujo one. The shoujo ones just tend to be … ugh. That’s my personal preference.
