Yeah sometimes I think I have no taste because I like a lot of things people consider badly done or cheesy. I personally loved El-Hazard I thought it was a riveting story and I loved the characters! But I do admit I like a lot of things people hate. For Instance Everyone hates The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen, but I thought It was pretty good. I would love to hear if you have any recommendations to people who liked El-Hazard, even if you didn’t like it yourself.
I do find the overall story and characters of the El Hazard series to be a little cheesy at best. O:

I’m half-way thru Narutaru and when I’m finish if I remember to I’m hoping to give you guys a review and spoilers on it.

I heard the anime doesn’t even come close to finishing half of the manga though. However, adaptations should stand on their own like how the Trigun and Elfen Lied anime did.

Saw 4 episodes of Taradora. While not extraordinary, it was rather funny and I like the characters especially Taiga and her friend.

Toradora’s awesome! You should watch more of it.

I just saw the movie Sword of the Stranger. Excellent film, I loved it. It’s really simple and fun and unlike Perfect Blue, it had a great story. I’d give it an 8 out of ten.

Speaking of simplicity, someone told me he wouldn’t give Rurouni Kenshin a 10/10 for masterpiece but a 9/10 for greatness because Kenshin is actually a rather simple story. That word opened my eyes to a TON of things regarding writing. Kenshin is simple, it’s one of the reasons it is so great. Sure it has subplots rearding the Oniwaban, the backstories of the villians and Kenshin’s past life but they all come together to make the experience that is Kenshin. This is another reason why I think Rurouni Kenshin is very well written, in that such a simple story could have so much depth. Not that complicated stories are bad, I love them and it’s obvious many complex stories are amongst the greatest ever but Kenshin didn’t need to rely on mystery like Mosnter and 20th Century Boys did with their mysteries on who their anagonists are and with all the world changing 20CB had. What do you guys think?

Also, this thread is almost going to reach a 1000 posts. I’m preparing to make another Who loves anime here afterb this thread gets clsoed so watch out.

There are a lot of different animes that I have seen and I hate them all. Especially certain ones that overly use sexual overtones in their characters.

 I just found out that trailer for an anime I saw YEAS ago at the end of Pokemon VHS during that ship incident where James buys a Magikarp and Ash got a Raicate in a trade. It was the trailer for “Ranma ½ The Movie: Big trouble in Nekonron, China” and that first sample of a J-rock song I had was “It’s love” by Rabbit.

~ I sorta feel like watching Ranma 1/2 but I’m not sure I can stomach the thought of the whole “gender-bender” thing esp.since this isn’t just “playing drag for gags” like Mrs.Doubtfire or a Tyler Perry movie. If I was like 7 again *way back before I even remotely knew about anything having to do with non-heterosexual issues it might been a different story since those issues wouldn’t be popping up in my mind throughout,so you can count this as one anime classic I don’t feel too obligated to watch even though I like Rumiko Takahashi’s humour and even if I’ve got a feeling that Ranma 1/2 is a more innocous “gender-bender” story the same way what Tenshi is to current haem series (coughlooking at you Kampfer -_-*cough)

*:rolleyes:good gravy I would shoe her in to sub for Toriyama’s humour if there ever was another Dragonball series

Also has anyone noticed how more anime series lately (from the trend I’ve seen on crunchyroll) are about high school aged kids or lower?.That and the still prevalent moe aesthetic is one thing that I notice is oddly adding to the increasd “kiddy-ization” of anime (there’s still loads of older ppl inended mana though).Hopefully it never gets to the point where it’s like how in the West that animation has always been thought of as a kid’s thing and what we’ll have left is kid’s anime plus jarring innuendo/fanservice that supposedly makes it more “mature”.

Does anyone here ever wish that they were fully literate, capable of writingthe scripts and speak Japanese orally so that we can go on a Japanese anim and manga forum and discuss with them what they think of the manga and anime we’re watching?.After all it’s always those guys who have the final say on how the industry is influenced and what it does, doesn’t?.See I’ve heard that the Japanese are always into cutsy stuff compared to the taste for dark and epic seeming stuff we have.Maybe if did understand and know what do think of the anime and manga media we could finally see what makes them tick and do the stuff they do in animation including lurid stuff and the seeminly non-sensical and bizzare stuff with vice-versa on them learning from us.

Oh my .If we got pennies for evertime we’ve heard that :D.I’d give you a more expounding reply but I’ve gtg soon and I’m sure that someone like Mr.Slyvester or such will take it away from here.

Really, though I’m sure there a niche of anie you’ll like the same way there’s a niche of genre fiction everyone likes or it might be the particular features of one certain serious that might make you think otherwise. You have put into heavy account at least a few of various Japanese cultural differences and trends, haven’t you?.

I wish I spoke in Japanese properly! True story: my mum actually knew someone who had a Chinese friend. Said Chinese told her to say in this and that in Chinese in order to greet the waiter. Said friend was really naive, thinking that the Japanese and Chinese speak in longer sentences even if they only meant to say hello and what not. What she didn’t know was that she was actually saying ‘‘I parked a truck on your mother’s vase’’. They actually went to a Chinese restaurant later where the owners were authentically chinese and said naive friend actually spoke those words to the waiter. Luckily, he was a nice guy and saw right through the whole deal. Mum told that when said friend found out, she got really, really angry. Classic!

But anyway, yeah, I sort of do wish to speak with other Japanese people in order to see what they get from anime. This being Malta, I actually saw some japanese girls looking at some shojo manga and they were cooing all over it. At the same time, I like to think of the Japanese as more innocent than us Europeans. To them, showing teenage fanservice isn’t really hat big of a deal not because they have looser standards but because they view teenage girls (14 to 19 years old of course) the same as adults. It’s the reason so many anime teens live alone in animeland without adult supervision. It’s expected of them to be more mature than children as Japanese society is stricter than our loose one. Man, I wish today was more like Europe in the middle ages when there were times of peace or Asia when Confuscius’ influence was at it’s peak!

As for Ranma 1/2, it doesn’t look that unclean for it’s premise. I can’t say anything other than, checking tv tropes ho yay page for Ranma 1/2, I confirmed that yeah, most tropers are sick in the head, interpret little acts of love to EPIC levels of idiocy and that Ranma looks to be mostly clean save for some fanservice. I think you can watch it though, it really doesn’t look bad or dirty at all.

Can’t say I encountered an anime with overtly sexual overtones towards the characters. Sure, I’ve seen a ton of anime and most of them do contain fanservice although few of them contain so much that it’s utterly disgusting (read: I’m looking at you Kenichi). If you want an anime free of fanservice, watch FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Monster and especially, Rurouni Kenshin, the greatest anime of all time in my honest opinion.

Um :o…Slyvester

I hope you just speaking casually b/c I’m sure you know that the contemporary Japan has loads of stuff that isn’t innocent.I say contemporary b/c let’s not jump the gun (no pun intended) and talk about old stuff like WWII doings.

Also that idea of viewing teenage girls the same as adults (I’m seriously not trying to derail this into a topic that’s been covered dozens maybe even hundreds of times here esp.since someone just brought up the sexual stuff in a recent posting) isn’t that one reason why we get irritatingly infamous issues in this medium like the chronophillic undertones,lolicon,b/c when adults see teens and younger as the same as them by that same token they see them as “fair game” in terms of having relationships with or perving out on?.

On a different note “Europe in the middle ages when there were times of peace”.:confused: Dude have you ever tried to wiki in the history of practically any European country during the middle ages?(though Malta actually might have been the exception;)).

Regarding innocence, I meant the Japanese people themselves. Kenshin taught me one thing, in that the sins of the goverment aren’t necessarilly the sins of the people and am well aware of Meiji atrocities (rape of Nankinganyone?). Regarding girls being viewed the same as adults, I didn’t mean it sexually but how they handle themselves. Honestly, and marriage should always be in everyones minds here of course, I don’t think it’s immoral for girls as young as 16 to marry guy who are the same age or a little bit older then them. I’m 19 by the way and don’t have a girlfriend. It’s just my opinion. I think that if they are raised well, any girl could be mature enough to handle herself so I view (most of the time) fanservice in anime regarding teenage girls or boys not something that I should be ovetly disgutd by. It’s objectionle, yes, but not sickening. I mean come on, how many teenage boys have we seen shirtless in western animation? Why should we be concerned when someone like Edward Elric gets his shirt ripped off during a fight?

Regarding the middle ages, yes, I know those times were a ****** age but unlike today, people had more catholic values and regarding time sof peace, there certainly were times of peace.

This is the 1000th post on this thread! Man, has it gotten popular. To celebrate, I have this picture of Hayate and Hinagiku being all lovey dovey!

If this thread does get locked though, I’m making another one. In fact, I’m preparing ti in advance just to be ready!

Points all taken. It seems I might really be the one 2 have the last say here if this closes soon :D.

Just before I summarize Narutaru up 2 volume 7 I gotta admit a little problem of mine when reading manga or watching anime.Sometimes I have trouble keeping track of Asian sounding names ^_^; which is something I’m a bit ashamed of b/c it might impair my ability to give someone due respect.Narutaru unfortunately falls into a “category of many faces without many names” for me.It’s been worse though I remember years ago when I was reading the “romance of the three kingdoms” books that as much it was interesting to see how much description went into military tactics, the novelty of prose translated from Chinese with some of it’s patterns (I guess) and the nice little poems at the end of each chapter that summarized what just went in said chapter (:p* I’m serious*,that was actually pretty cool) I don’t think I could even keep track past a dozen names.Slyvester I’m guessing you watched the anime and seeing so I’ll saying ahead of time that I’m sorry 4 not remembering the names I’ll try 2 next time.

Without further ado here I go.A little girl (Shina?) is trying to do some summer art homework while at her grandparents where her grandma shows her dad’s unimpressive childhood drawings. One of them resembles a creature that pops up later on.Shina takes a dare to swim near far where there’s a rough current and when she dives she finds a *sea star like creature (Hoshimaru). They think Shina drowns but she ends up at a doctor’s and grows fond of Hoshimaru. When her dad picks her up to take her home on a plane there plane gets attacked by a flying sword like thing that almost takes them down. When she get’s home she’s out with a friend and encounters the boy who controls the flying sword thing. He explains how those creatures are extra-dimensional beings called “shadow dragons”.Him and some others teens are going to use them to start a new world order by sending it back to the stone age tech level and control things ala social Darwinist dingbat quasi-fascist letting only the strong live and such.Hoshimaru kills him by strangely pulling out a scrap metal bar from the plane damage impaling him with it.The girl gets away and tells one of her friends about this who also has another sea star like creature (Ensof) and I think she also has an issue of cutting her wrists.Another group of take-over-the world wannabe teens talks about about how said teen that got impaled hasn’t come back yet

*DANG do I keep on thinking that Patrick from Spongebob is going 2b popping up xD !

The girls gotta keep this a secret and there’s a whole sub-plot involving these two fishy government agents,a skirmish where Shina’s dad (who’s like a part time army pilot) almost gets taken out by one of the bad guy’s but ends up hospitialized but had one of his friends killed, the ole commentary of what the military thinks of all this, there’s a fierce confrontation btw the bad guys shadow dragons (that while neutralized in the end) still take out the group of soldiers who fought and a few elderly ppl in a nearby town with a gas attack, the 2 gov agents are following the kids including Shina.Honestly though volume 6 which I’ve recently read doesn’t make much sense 2 me esp.since I can’t keep track of names.Something about how Shina’s friend is pregnant, shadow dragons and ppl becoming one,a boy who didn’t impregnate her deciding to take care of her and suggesting her to join them,Shina meeting some new ppl and nothing much.Still none of that seinen worthy horror that I’m curious 2 see how it’ll be pulled of.

It’s okay so far but much like how EVA to me was like Prometheus in quasi-reverse with focus on the human-side of things and the issues of the human characters this manga has been like that with the focus on the cast of kid characters and adults.I’m sorta disappointed though by the lack of development given to the shadow dragons (so far) who I thought were going to be given a deeper and more startling presentation on consequentialism then the season 3 Digimon._ It still can do that I suppose, but I’m already halfway thru this and seeing as how these are extra-dimensional beings who don’t really seem to get hurt (not being physical in the normal sense has somthing to do with it I guess) show practically no emotion or seeming response (neither animal-like like in Pokemon or more anthropomorphic-like like in Digimon) I’m wondering how or what there going to do with them.I’m still hoping for it though.

I really haven’t seen Narutaru or know anything about it other than that it’s some darker and edgier Digimon clone or something. In fact, not menaing to be rude but I actually didn’t read half your post for fear it might get spoiled. Are there an spoilers in your post?

Regarding names, I have a problem at first usually but as time goes on and I get to know the characters more, it fades away. I remember the whole cast of a Song of Ice and Fire and their role in the story. Now imagine me tackling the Wheel of Time! I actually have no problem with Asian names but we’re not all the same now eh?🙂

Say sidetrack, you enver said it but what is your most favorite anime ever? In my opinion a favorite anime must be one that deeply affected you with it’s message or story, hit all the right notes of making you emotional (be they sad or happy emotions) and just stayed with you for a very long time. My favorite is Rurouni Kenshin simply because of it’s simple story and GREAT protagonist. My least favorite anime is School Days which was nothing but exploitative drivel.

I came in thinking that too but it doesn’t feel that way so far b/c the “mons” of this series have hardly been doing stuff. While you do get stuff like apathy, covert government involvement, peer pressure, school pressure which weren’t dealt with on Digimon along with terrorism (AFAIK the 1st 4 Digi-seasons didn’t do that) & eugenics (the social Darwinist trash that the bad guys thinking operates under) the way such things are brought up aren’t like that different form other manga or anime that covers those issues.

Oh man it’s finally happened**chuckle,…you ever find it odd how I come to this thread, have lots to say (there’s a reason I use a teal deer:D) but oddly enough don’t really have much to say on what anime I’m watching as of the moment?.In all honestly I’ve prob.watched very little anime beyond the number of my fingers.TRUST ME as much as I’d love to chat with you all about what I’ve actually seen and read after lounging around contently for hours on such sedentary activity as much as I talk about what I think and speculate I don’t really find the time to do it given my schoolwork  and not having the same kind of viewing stamina I had when I was little.I spent a notable portion of my last summer like that finally watching Digimon tamers after having heard so much about how this apparent disappointment was actually excellent (it* did* turn out to be very good),Digimon frontier yet another kid’s anime I should have🙂 watched eons ago and the both OMGoddess seasons.Believe me there’s a list of stuff I got arranged for myself to dive into on free-time.Although I can sure view and read into something *considerably *better then when I was a kid I personally worry for my eye health that I gotta watch over.:(Having watched excessive TV is the real reason I even originally have to wear glasses for, actually.

Yet to answer your question,my favorite anime in terms of how it’s memorably stuck to me and fills the criteria I emboldened in your quote is FMA (the 2k3 anime). You know how some of us say that an unstable person should sincerely not watch Eva or else it’ll make them worse?.Yeah, the 2k3 FMA sorta did that to me:D;.

Unfortunately while I think it sort of affirmed the quid-pro-quo and fatalistic perception I have always had of life most of time to a more vast degree* it still produced some okay things in me.Without it though besides having one less motivation while in my chemistry class I wouldn’t have learned and soaked up political extremism (esp.during both world wars),nationalism, different (though not neccesarily good) way of perceiving sin,God,religion,a honk load of stuff on philosophy (unfortunately I delved into nihilism and existentialism both of the unsuitable variant in particular:blush:),a sometimes unsettling view of mysticism, the impact of parental abondenment, ideology, the nature of questioning and belief, the role of war in economics, the diversity of moral and ethical stances, limits etc. What really sticks out in mind now is how the concept of materialism is persented on this show _.

IMO what the concept of the “brain in vat” thought experiment and the nature of AI and information impacting our perception of reality was in the Matrix series *that is what *alchemy and the relationships between matter and metaphysical substances was in Fullmetal alchemist.Picture this.Remember in how in the 1st episode Ed says something like “if you take the myth out of the soul then what is it but blood?”.Could you imagine if someone had said to him “No Ed,the soul isn’t matter it’s information” **what kind ** of route the show would’ve taken?.IMO I feel so strongly it would have turned out closer to the Matrix and haven gotten to the point better then the slowly executed New Age-ish babble and faux symbolic visuals of that movie trilogy.

What I should have picked up years ago IMO though is the theme in the story of brotherhood and how this is all happening b/c of Ed’s noble goal of getting Al his body back but wild stuff and conspiring comes into play with their lives.

If I were asked if it made me “intellectually fit” enough to have venture the daring exploits that are my questions on this forum 😛 I would answer “does it matter?😉

*oh trust me the FMA influenced part of it is gone to the point that I safely watch FMA without unhealthy pondering produced even though that fatalism of mine still lives in a different comparitively less strong way I’m still trying to get dissipate.

Maybe one day I’ll answer your question about favorite characters. That is one bite I’ll have to chew on for a while.Same goes for least favourite anime.I’m guessing that by that you mean I detest it and so far at least I’ve got no real qualms with any anime or manga of the little I’ve seen.

My mixed feelings of DBZ and my particular anger towards the sightless praise and fandom (ESP.the common garden Youtube variety) of Toriyama surely count for something don’t they?.

Dang * canon* -_- “Toriyama involved” post-Buu saga DBZ movie 4 2k13 “Battle of gods” which might very well defenestrate my fan-fic.He also hit my idea of a DB movie with mythical ancient Egyptian inspired characters before me with this one :doh2: ]

Matte, matte, matte! rushes in and jumps I will not have discussion about moe without meeee!! DX lands with shounen-style impakuto!!

I would actually contest that the very focus on teenage characters can be a means to dispel the notion that anime is kids stuff. After all, teenage issues are in fact about growing into maturity. Moe, in its many shape and forms, need not always be the childish variety. (Then again, that’s also a turn-on but my point is that it’s not limited.)

Heck, older characters still have a great moe factor to them.

We must not also forget the fact that fan service only makes up for half the reasons why a work can hit closer to Mature in terms of rating. You also have violence. From my experience, advocates of those who are for making everything kid-friendly (yes 4Kids, I’m looking at you) have as much an aversion to violent acts as sexual ones.

Or me!

The whole moe thing had become too mainstream. And yes, Vocaloids also have moe in it. If you don’t believe me, then it is best to look at Hatsune Miku.
