Who on earth, has the ultimate authority over a Catholic institution like Notre Dame University?

Is it the President or Dean of the University, or is it the Roman Catholic Pope and the local Bishop?

I would be overjoyed if The Bishops decided to remove its Catholic Status! Sadly, I for see almost nothing happening and the growing gap between “Catholics” and Catholics continuing to Widen.

Outside of God and the state where applicable, the ultimate authority over any university or college belongs to the benefactors and their intentions.

Outside of God and the state where applicable, the ultimate authority over any university or college belongs to the benefactors and their intentions.

I think the authority for most universities is vested in the Board of Trustees. Some of these may be elected by alumni, but many are self perpetuating - The Board elects its successors.

I believe you’reright, Joe Kelley.

However for a university to present itself as a Catholic university, it requires a charter from the Holy See, if I’m not mistaken.
