Cuz it sure would be nice to have a treat today.

Sundays are not considered a fast day. Every Sunday is a mini Easter…I have treated myself today because it is also Laetare Sunday

The fast does not apply to Sunday. In fact, if you count the days of Lent, there are 40 days not including Sundays. If you include Sundays there is either 46 or 47.

Speaking of Laetare Sunday…What is the Second Scrutiny???

What is Laetare?
It mentioned it in the missalette, but there was no explanation.

Thank God for the internet, because honestly, if it weren’t here, I don’t know if I’d be Catholic today. :gopray:

Laetare comes from the EF Missal, the opening prayer. “Laetare [Jerusalem]”.

It means “Rejoice, Jerusalem.”

Code:
Laetare is Latin for rejoice, as is Gaudete on the 2nd Sunday of Advent. It is the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, which you will find in the missal but is seldom used.
It was an old custom to name the masses for the first word of that antiphon, much as Papal Encyclicals are named for the first word or two of their text. That was the reason the Hunchback of Notre Dame was named Quasimodo, he was found in the church on Quasimodo Sunday. I don’t remember which Sunday that is, one after Easter I think, but that is where I learned all this. 😃

Joe is correct and as he said, Quasimodo Sunday is the Sunday After Easter, traditionally called Low Sunday in the Pius V Missal, the Introit of which begins “Quasi modo geniti infantes” (“As newborn babes” - or in a more literal translation “In the same way as babes”)

I break mine as a matter of principle, though I try to do it in a regulated sort of way. So I make sure to eat three squares and/or nip at something between meals but I try to find something to keep curbing in deference to the overall season.

dont think its a requirement to fast on sun, but no i didnt break it. lol. (im in a state where im perpetually fasting)
I had an awesome brownie tonight at church. 👍
But what I really had hankering for was a doughnut! Maybe next Sunday.
Now my tummy is bothering me from the sudden sugar jolt. 😊

I did and became sick as a dog…

We as a family have given up highly processed foods for lent. Which means no HFCS, no fast food, no foods your great-grandmother would not recognize as food, no packaged food with over five ingredients, avoid any food that makes a health claim on the box, and so on. So I make bread, pasta, yogurt, stay out of the middle isles in the grocery store, buy mostly vegetables, very little meat, some cheeses, look for local stainable foods to buy and eat, and cook every meal from scratch. We also make sure every meal is at the table not in front of the TV or in the car. It makes you appreciate your daily bread.

So yesterday we decided to break our Lenten fast and have McDonalds because my daughter has been asking for it. I ate a quarter pounder with cheese, fries and Coke, I would have done better to lick the drive thru floor, I didn’t even finish the Coke, and became so sick I had to send the rest of the day, shall we say behind closed doors. :o

So I don’t think we will be breaking the Lenten fast again. :signofcross:

Oh man! That’s terrible, I guess your body was accustomed to all that good healthy food and was really annoyed at you for changing your diet!
I’ve had some pretty disgusting things from McDonald’s.
Your post has inspired me to stay home this morning and eat a bagel!

The only two days where fasting is mandatory are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting at any other time is voluntary (apart from one hour prior to receiving Communion).

I break the fast on Sundays, but don’t go all out. Going all out is for Easter when I can’t fast period. Unfortunately, I’ve discovered recently that when Sunday comes along there’s nothing I’m really interested in eating anymore. Ice cream? Too lazy and cold. Pasta? Meh. It’s horrible, all those cravings that show up during the week disappeared on that one day and then I’m back to, why didn’t I eat that cake?!😛

I just bet that when Easter comes around I still won’t be interested in food. They’re probably laughing at me upstairs too.

:o

My parents “conveniently” forgot to teach me that rule. I didn’t learn it until a couple years ago. I feel guilty if I think about doing it.
