Who prays the Roman Missal at home?

I have received the new Roman Missal as a gift from a friend. Does anyone have suggestions and what all do you do especially when we cannot consecrate the Eucharist?

Also why no hymns? Do you supplement with hymns?
I practiced mass with kids at home and I think it’s a great tool to do so. What is your experience with the Roman Missal?
 
I think a missal is a book meant for the holy mass, and as such it should be used only in the mass,- apart from ,it is a guidance for the priests to celebrate the mass. I think we should not bring a Holiness from the alter of a church to our home.We have a number of booklets/books for the guidance of our prayer at home.A mass is to be sacrificed only on the alters in the church.
 
Do you mean a hand missal, or an altar edition?

I use my hand missals (have one for OF, one for EF) to prepare for Mass. I try to take time to study the propers each day. For EF – especially if I will be serving – it helps to study the Latin texts ahead of time. In the evening, I try to take a few minutes to meditate once again on the daily readings.

I also use my OF hand missal when praying the Liturgy of the Hours so I have the corrected translation of the Collects.

Altar missals, conversely, are meant for use on the altar, as the name implies.

As far as “practicing” Mass with the children at home, check out this post from Father Zuhlsdorf about children “playing Mass” (especially that photo!)

For a Christian in the word, the missal is the best book of prayers. It contains the experiences of the Church, the teacher of prayer. With the whole Church one may converse with God in Christ through the Holy Spirit, whether during the liturgical synaxis or in the intimacy of the heart.

The use of the missal need not be limited to the celebration of the Mass. It can help you prepare for Mass by facilitating meditations on the meaning of the text…

I was just wanting to know other peoples experience but I appreciate your opinion.

That’s the Midwest Theological Forum hand missal. Same one I have. It also has a great selection of devotional prayers in the back.

Referring back to your first post, there are no hymns because technically the Mass does not include hymns. The music is already provided in the Mass texts. The Entrance Antiphons and Communion Antiphons are to be chanted/sung/recited. Hymns are merely a substitute (and sadly, usually a substandard substitute) for these sacred Mass texts. The website New Liturgical Movement usually posts the proper chants for Sundays and Solemnities, such as this post for yesterday, the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Is it a daily missal or just a Sunday missal?

My husband and I have a missal and use it to reading the readings before we attend Mass to prepare for the Mass. We have then been known to take it with us to Mass.

I think trying to celebrate something like the Mass at home is inappropriate. As for why it does not contain hymns, hymns are not a neccessary componant of the Mass. In fact, it is far more appropriate to chant the entrance antiphon rather than to replace it with a hymn.

I would use the missal perhaps to educate your children and yourself on the order of the Mass and about the liturigical cycle.
 
I kind of feel that the Missal is for the Mass. It’s complement in daily prayer is the Liturgy of the Hours.

However it’s a great idea to read the daily Mass readings if you can’t get to daily Mass, but praying the rest of it is pretty redundant outside of the Mass. Praying all or part of the LOTH is IMHO the best liturgical prayer you can do outside the Mass; it is truly a liturgical act unlike using the Missal outside of context, which is not a liturgical act.

Is that really so though? To me more people around the world are participating in the liturgy of the Mass than the LOTH. Nothing against it I like it as well but isn’t the Missal just as much a liturgical prayer?
 
I have to say I do like the prayers before Mass and after communion that are in the Missal; good reflections.
 
I use my missal at weekday masses. The parish I attend during the week does not have the weekday readings in their missals. About half the people attending this parish during the week have either a missal or a magnificat for that reason. I don’t pray the mass when unable to attend but I do pray the prayers and litanies in the back and if I can’t make it to mass on a weekday the readings are right there. There are a lot of good prayers in there.

I purchased, also a St. Joseph Sunday missal from Catholic book publishing. It is a one year edition. I noticed they are sold out now but I love it. I started taking it to Sunday mass a couple of weeks ago because on a particular Sunday I had one of the missals the church has and they ran out because they are at the door instead of in the pews and the woman next to me didn’t have a missal, so when I noticed her scrounging through the pew I shared with her but then realized the need to carry a missal. Again, I love it.

I, also have been saving my money to purchase the St. Joseph weekday missals when they come out because they have always been my favorite and there are more of us in my family.

Both my parents have had a weekday missal for as long as I can remember and they pray the prayers in the back every day. These missals are very well worn.

No it isn’t outside the Mass. The only way for one to participate in the liturgy of the Mass is to attend Mass.

The LOTH is the liturgical prayer of the Church outside the Mass.
 
I use my 1962 Roman Missal for morning and evening prayers as well as for mass in the EF. My missal has Gregorian chant included. Hymns are another issue. For that I would select an older Hymnal such as the St.Gregory Hymnal or the st. Basil Hymnal. Stay away from many of the modern editions as some publishers have severely change the lyrics.
