Who selects Missal/song book

Who selects Missal/Song book in your parish ?

Please name the one you use. Ours is put out by Oregon Press.

We don’t have a missal that i have ever seen. We use the “Gather” song book. Does anyone know where the Gather is from and how it was compiled?
 
We don’t have a missal (for use by the people - unless they buy their own).

Our songbook was developed by the Choir Directors - Each of the 15 choirs in our parish used to have its own, but the directors got together and compiled one by removing all the non-approved (by the bishop) songs and putting all the rest into one single book.

That is really too bad. My husband is non-Catholic, and complains that the Catholic Church is one of the least “user-friendly” churches he has ever been to, because of how hard it is to follow the Mass.

How do we expect anyone to come in and join our church when the attitude seems to be “Hey, either you know it or maybe you just don’t belong here.” Not only should there be missals available, but books explaining the Mass should be available, too… and somewhere you can pick one up without being noticed. There are adult Catholics, too, who would read such material if it were available in the pews, but who don’t want to admit they need it.

I hate to break it to everyone, but there are people out there who are afraid of us, who find us unwelcoming, who think that we are so hopelessly complicated that there is no use trying to learn our faith. Could we not make it a little easier for a potential convert to see what we’re really about?
 
We have been using OCP at least for the past 16 years. I have no idea who originally selected it. I think they just keep ordering it without looking at other options.

I agree with you 100%. When I started attending Mass with my wife (something over 30 years ago), I spoke no Spanish, had no access to a Spanish language Missal, and eventually stopped attending. (I stayed on the plaza (town square) while my wife went to Mass.) A Missal would have been of great use.

For a while, we used a Missalette, but the parish hasn’t bought those in several years. I, personally, have a very good one - but it is too thick and user unfriendly for actual use in Mass. I use it for studying the readings before going to Mass.

One problem with the Missalettes (when we had them) is that they would always disappear. There are approximately 20 week-end Masses in my parish, (actually, at that time, it was more like 15), and people in the earlier Masses would often take them home with them. It got to be too expensive to order enough for everybody.
