Who should I evangelize?

Hi,

I was thinking about who I should specifically intend to evangelize, and bring Christ to. I just declared myself as a philosophy major at my college, and the thought came to me that whoever I study, I do so with the purpose of introducing Christ into their thought. I want to evangelize Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, humanists, etc. But how do you decide who you are going to focus on evangelizing?

Hi Joshua, I’m a college student too and I LOVE evangelizing. The best thing to do is to pray about it. Ask God to bring people into your life and He will. You can also just walk around campus and start dialoguing with people. I’m involved with FOCUS and sometimes I’ll go bare-handing (that’s what they call it!) with the missionaries at my school.

When evangelizing, remember to be considerate of a person’s beliefs. If you come across as condescending the dialogue will usually not last long. I love to ask questions over and over. God usually brings athiests to me, which I love! because I used to be an athiest. It’s always beautiful to have a conversation about Truth with an athiest because they are usually searching for it. By asking enlightening questions, we as Christians can help plant seeds of Christ’s light in their souls.

God has also helped me to start a Bible study with freshmen girls at my school. I didn’t really see that one coming, but it’s a wonderful way to evangelize to fellow Catholics women they embark on a spiritual journey at a college that can be a bit of a playground for sin.

I have a friend who was praying about evangelizing to Muslims, and He brought a young Muslim woman to her. They have been friends now for over a year, and my friend says that she is probably the closest friend she has at school. Real friendships can be formed through evangelization.

Have you taken a comparative religions course? You might try to study various faiths and decide if one interests you or perhaps strikes a dissonant chord in you, and might inspire you to evangelize. I think that evangelists should know their target audience well, and this means knowing some anthropology and rooting arguments in the cultural beliefs that are likely to ring true for the person.

Have you inquired with your pastor or spiritual director about opportunities for evangelism at the parish level? This would be the best place to start. Your parish may already have programs for this, or if not, you might like to start one with the supervision of a priest as chaplain. For the past year, my parish has been running a door-to-door evangelization of the neighborhood, and there is a community of sisters, the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, who can come to your parish and instruct people in the art of evangelization.

Evangelize whoever God brings into your life.

For Catholics, the first mission field is our own household. Our family, friends, and fellow Catholics as we are called to ever deepening conversion.

Evangelism requires that we invest ourselves in others, and that can mean a lot of things, so be sure that you are prepared. Remember Matthew 25:31-46. You need to see the face of Our Lord in whomever you encounter.

Prayer is the first preparation and then study as through each we come to better know Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the better we know Him, the better we can share Him with others.
