The Bible always mentions Adam’s sin, but wasn’t Eve the first one to eat the apple? My teacher said that in theology, Adam represents the mind and Eve the sense, so it wasn’t until Adam ate the apple that it became the first sin. I’m still a bit confused, could someone give me furthur explanation?

Thanks and God Bless

Eve came out of Adam. Eve was in Adam, Adam was not in Eve. If Adam had not joined her he would have become a living testimony against her. She would be utterly alone without Adam. He could have prevented all this. Adam’s nature is handed to her. The mold wasn’t broken untill Adam sinned.

Hi,

I am not sure if both the understanding is correct. As long as I understand, the first sin was committed by Eve and the first sin was not the act of eating the forbidden fruit.
*
Eve was tempted by the serpent, Eve listened to him and out of her free will DECIDED to eat it and also to give it to her husband. *

So technically the first sin was the decision made against the rule of God/or will of God. She used her free will to choose and her choice was against God, that is the sin. Action came later and Adam participated in the act of eating of course by free will and sinned against God.

Hope I am not complicating it.

Joe

Eve was deceived to live by the flesh. She was not commanded by God not to eat the fruit, Adam was. Adam disobeyed with his eyes open.

Hers was venial, Adam could have interceded for her as Moses, interceded on behalf of the Israelite. Instead he chose to join her. His sin was mortal.

I’m glad I decided to read the Bible and consider this question.

Gen 2:16-17 says that God gave ADAM the command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, at the center of the garden. Right?

It must have been Adam who told her not to eat from the tree. Adam was the prophet, bringing God’s word to her.

And, in typical Jewish fashion, of building a fence around the Torah, Adam apparently told her not even to touch it.

So, you can make the case that the sin was not committed until Adam ate of the fruit.

But, the sin was “in becoming like gods” and making their own rules. So, you can also make the case that Eve sinned first in eating and in giving the fruit to Adam to eat, because she decided to make her own rules.

But, who gets punished? First the serpent, then the woman, then the man. There was plenty of guilt to go around.

What’s the difference?

I remember being in a Bible study once where it was hypothosized that the first sin wasn’t that of eating the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, but it was that Eve, when being tempted by the serpent subtly changed what God and told her and Adam.

In Genesis 2:16-17 it says:
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
In Genesis 3:2-3, Eve when confronted by the serpent changes what God had told them.
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ "
God never told Adam or Eve that they could not touch the fruit or the tree or even that they would die if they touched it. Perhaps this isn’t an outright sin, but it may have opened up Eve, more subtly, to the temptations by the serpent, making her more prone to accept what the serpent told her.

Hi,
I believe this is how the third chapter in Genisis goes.
Code:
1: Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2: And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4: And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6: And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Here is the conversation between Eve and the serpent. It is very clear that Eve knew of the commandment from God and she also understood the consequences of braking it. But she still went ahead and did it. So Adam cannot be named ad the one who disobeyed first. That choice that Eve made by Free will make it a sin, the first one, with/without Adam being part of it. Yes Adam too sinned, by Free Will. Both of them did commit a mortal sin because the choice they made was of Free Will.

Also read the " And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.15: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16: Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."

And I don’t even want to doubt that God made an error judgment and announced the above mentioned consequences. It was addressed to the women for she DID it and God CANNOT make any error there. But they both was kicked out and asked to toil and to earn their life back thus He surely acknowledged the Adam’s part in it and made him accountable for what he did too.

Does it make sense at all ?

Adam’s sin was the more terrible one, because he alone is the human origin of us all, including Eve. It appears that Eve’s sin, alone, would not have doomed the human race to lose God’s friendship, but Adam’s did, requiring a second Adam (Jesus) to essentially re-create a saved humanity.

Still, Eve’s sin was prior, and her disobedience influenced Adam’s own sin. That is one of the ways in which we see Eve as a (negative) type of Mary. Like Eve’s sin, Mary’s obedience could do nothing to save humanity – only Jesus qualified to do that. But her obedience came before and helped make possible Jesus’ humanity, through which He redeemed us. Just as Jesus is the Second Adam, undoing by His obedience unto death the sin of the First Adam which brought death to all, Catholics see Mary as the New Eve, a “bookend” permitted by God to symbolically reverse Eve’s contribution to the Fall.

And of course, in a nice little twist, where the first Eve took her flesh from the first Adam (according to the story), the second Adam took His human flesh from His mother, the second Eve.

Eve was ‘virgin’ born.
Jesus was Virgin born.

[1 Timothy]
{2:13} For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
{2:14} And Adam was not seduced, but the woman, having been seduced, was in transgression.

Adam was formed first, then Eve. But Eve sinned first. For there was a certain point in time, after Eve sinned, but before Adam sinned. At that point, Eve had been led astray and had sinned; she was in a state of transgression. But Adam had not yet fallen. His sin happened second.

Eve took the forbidden fruit first, if she have not I don’t think Adam would have eaten it at all his was a response to her!

She was lost! He was compiled to join her for his love of her. there might have been a feeling that God might hold back some punishment if they were both guilty I think the fact that Adam didn’t leave his wife to get raked of the coals give him character.

I’m not sure i would want to be a decedent of a man that let his first love take all the punishment and say’s to God hey that woman was no good make me a new one that talks less :sad_bye: JK

Eve yes to sin < Mary’s yes to God

I have to disagree…if Eve actually was the only person who sinned, she should have been the only person who got punished. If Adam only sinned to try and share the blame with Eve it was incredibly stupid. How would two sins make God more happy than one sin?

Eve still sinned. Now Adam just sinned too.

Adam as God’s first human Creation had responsibility for Eve. Eve sinned first and Adam approved of her actions making a-part of her sinl making it there sin.

well Eve sinned first, but Adam did right after. Its not a slight on Eve or women as some people may think

Both had sinned the question was who sinned first!

I just decided to throw in the motive

Eve had chosen the fruit as she was told that there I eyes were to be open she enticed her husband to partake in the act

The bible states that serpent temped eve first not Adam she gave some to her husband the serpent knew that Adam was the protector the relationship with Adam and the lord was profound he named all the animals had dominion over all the earth.

I don’t think it’s a simple cause of two wrongs i think the relationship between god and Adam was special and I don’t think Adam would have sinned at all if were just him and the serpent had not deceived her first.

God told him that they would die so if my wife had been the one to have eaten something to make her die I’m not sure i would have the heart to live but given the time spent with god i would trust that god was awesome and would provide a way.

Let’s look at the dynamic they had no children before that if eve had died alone Adam had not part there is no guarantee that god would have gave him a new wife and thus the end of the human race.
They order of punishment was first serpent woman than man and was far less serve to the man then what was first told god said that they would certainly die but god didn’t allow them to die right away thus ending the human race right there but there must have been something to redeem from the first parents cause he could have easily say you die I’ll make a new Adam and a new eve but God showed mercy why.

So are we all saying that Eve gets a pass for changing God’s word and we focus solely on her eating the fruit. It seems to me she was starting to be disobedient prior to the picking and eating of any fruit.

The exegesis for the 2nd and 3rd chapters of Genesis makes us nervous. Why? Because the sin Adam and Steve committed, according to the story, was anal sex–the mystery Saint Augustine almost solved 1600 years ago. (He thought the sin was normal penile/vaginal sex!) For more information google “WikiAnswers-What is wrong with Robert Hagedorn’s Blogs”

The way I see it, it was the joint sin of Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were one. The masculine and feminine form a unity in Adam and Eve

Adam sinned first . He was given the command not to eat . He was given Eve . It was his job to pass on everything God said and to admonish Eve if needed . He is her head just as Christ is head of the Church .
Adams sin was that he watched her , note that he was right there when she did it , he did not object but let her do what God had commanded against then compounded it by eating himself .
My personal opinion and it IS just an opinion is that Adam saw that Eve was not harmed and wanted to try the fruit also .
Cheers

Basic Catholic teaching **regarding Adam and Original Sin ** is found in the
Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, ISBN: 1-57455-109-4
Paragraphs 355-421.

The good news of Jesus Christ follows in Paragraph 422, etc.

One can put the word paragraph and its number in the Catechism’s search bar in link www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm
Entering topics, like Adam, is also very useful.

When you enter a paragraph number, like “paragraph 355”, and then click on the opening line, CCC Search Result - Paragraph # 355 you will see the following under the paragraph:
