Dirk Obbink, the world-renowned papyrologist now being investigated for theft and fraud in connection with fragments of early Biblical manuscripts acquired by the Museum of the Bible in Washington, is the subject of a lengthy article in the June issue of The Atlantic. Obbink had been simultaneously under contract to the museum and to Oxford University, where, in addition to his teaching duties, he was one of the custodians of the Oxyrhynchus papyri collection. From last October onward, occasional news reports had been emerging about Obbink’s remarkably successful attempts to fool all the people some of the time. The Atlantic article draws all the strands together.
