I am interested about getting some bible software, mostly so I can do searches for verses and find certain key words that are found with in the bible.

Which software ? How much? where did you get it?? Plus any reviews.

I use these, and pay diddly squat, (nada) except for the electricity bill.

Here and Here.

thanks that search in the bible was great and did exactly what I needed it for.

There’s very good one here:

vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/_INDEX.HTM

I’ve used the KJV extensively at www.blueletterbible.org as suggested above. The search is very easy to use, but the NAB can be cross-referenced at the Vatican. If you’re interested, others (Jewish) can be found here:

chabad.org/library/article.asp?AID=63255

And here:

jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Bible/jpstoc.html

A good cross-reference can be found here:

biblegateway.com/

A piece of advice along the way: Be careful. All of these have at least some bias built in, based on the translators, and both Jewish versions rely heavily on the King James.

thanks for all who helped on earlier post about on-line or CD-Rom Catholic bible in Spanish. I did get an inexpensive Biblia Latinoamericano in Spanish from the Spanish Bookstore in Chicago, it is from Word Among Us, never thought to check there.

I use harmony media’s Welcome to the Catholic Church which has not only CCC but NAB and RSV-CE on one CD. these are important because I do not have internet access at work.

so I am good to go now.

I own both Logos and Harmony products. Logos is by far an excellent resource to help study the bible. Especially in helping to nail down Greek and Hebrew and translations.

That being said, Logos is a protestant company. And their new “Catholic” program includes some protestant cmomentaries such as Matthew Henry but NO Catholic commentaries. The only one available is in the Collegeville Collection. That in itself can get you started.

I own a lot of books from Logos so if you have any more questions let me know!

God Bless!

Try E-Sword if you want free software for your PC. They have the Latin Vulgate, the DR…quite a few good bibles.

e-sword.net/

Anyway, check it out…

I too am a Logos user frustrated by their relative lack of Catholic resources, although I do have the RSV-CE, NAB, Jerusalem bibles, and some Catholic commentaries I have bought over the years.

A note to other Logos users, the new Catholic series, a small start down that path, is being backed/supported by Steve Ray, who is on CA Live a lot. Check his web site out for info on his work there. His goal is to help Logos to expand into a truly good Catholic resource, and he needs our help to make that happen!

Agreed. Although it’s a Protestant program, I find it to be quite useful. It comes with the KJV that has a lookup for every Hebrew/Greek word used. Aside from that, I have Gill’s commentary, which helps me look up fulfilled prophecies and such. They do have Catholic Bibles, which is another plus.

E-sword is great.

Logos Bible software is good. It has quite a few translations available. I also own in book format the Douay-Rheims, KJV (with Apocrypha), NRSV, NAB, and NASB. I use all of these translations in my Catholic Sunday school classes (Bible study). Right now, we are studying the book of Romans. I don’t care for dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought) translations. I like the formal equivalence (word-for-word) translations. As for paraphrases (like the Good News Bible, the Message, NLT), I don’t care for them at all.

I use BibleWorks and it’s awesome. I’m a Protestant and they of course have all the KJV, ESV, NKJV, NIV etc. but they also have the douay rheims, revised standard, and the nab which I understand are the version of choice for many Catholics.

I also use it, but an older version. It is rather light on the Catholic resources, but it is a great program. It also costs $$$. Mine has DRB, NAB, Vulgate, LXX, NJB, RSV (not CE), etc. Of course, it has full Hebrew and Greek. If you want to use the original languages or do sophisticated searches, like searching for words even when they are separated by several verses, it is very nice.

For free, try esword mentioned above. It has a decent selection of translations.

I really like

Accordance Software.

They have lots of versions, including greek, hebrew, and latin, as well as lots of other reference modules.

It’s made for Macintosh computers, so that limits it’s appeal a bit; but if you are on a Mac, it’s a nice package.

e-sword runs on the sword backend project I believe.
The sword project is at
crosswire.org/
Other opensource projects for linux and windows can be found there. The limitation of available translations is due to copywrites mostly. The ESV module just came out. To view ancient greek you will need greek unicode fonts. The Strongs morphlogy can map to this as well (different modules have different capabilities). You should be able to use multiple frontends with the system wide sword backend and modules. Search indexes are created by the frontends however.
