Who was Cain's wife? Must've been his mom or sister!

It never occured to me when reading Genesis before, but there had to be a lot of inbreeding going on the first few generations. Why was it OK then and not later? If it wasn’t ok, then why didn’t God make a separate, non-related woman for Cain? Same w/the subsequent children of Adam and Eve, they had to have bred w/their parents or sibs?! Any comments?

Re: How did God create Cain’s wife?
Since it is ordinary Catholic teaching that all men and women descend from Adam and Eve, Cain’s wife likely was a descendant of Adam and Eve. If so, that means that Cain’s wife was his sister. Adam and Eve had more children than those who are named in the Bible, as is recorded in Genesis 5:4. For more information and greater discussion of the issues involved, please see the article linked below.

Never mind! I just did a search on CAF and found this, among other things…

adam and eve, were the first to be made, but not the last, if i recall correctly from bible school.

The point is, it definitly had to be his mom or sister because there were no other people on the planet. All others besides Adam and Eve were Cain’s siblings, until he mated w/another female of those (mom or sister) and had children. He and Able were their first children. He killed abel, so then there was just Cain until later, Eve had another son, and later other children, all being Cain’s siblings…The church teaches that all humans descend from Adam and Eve , that they were literal 1 man and 1 woman, not a type of all races that God made separately you know? It just seems weird that God would allow something in the beginning that later would be condemned when he could’ve done it differently…making another man and woman out of dust and rib…etc. Even Eve then was related to Adam since she came from his blood being from his bone! Interesting…

One idea I’ve come across is that Genesis is a patchwork of oral traditions that have been linked together. Some things were chosed to be written down and others were not. There are a lot of gaps in Genesis.

Genesis is subtly, almost imperceptibly divided into twelve sections. The transition is so smooth we hardly notice it, although sometimes it does seem abrupt.

The first section, the creation account, transitions around Gen 2:3 to 2:4. And you find the words “such was the creation of the world” or something like that. There are other narrator turning points and it’s impossible to know what happened in the gap between these sections.

Some of the parts of the story that are hard for us to understand might have easily been understood in the time when it was written. For example, from 1:1 to 2:3, the creation account is a great rupture from the religions of the pagans surround the Jews. No, the stars and the sun and the moon are not gods, they were created by God. The animals were created, they are not gods. Trees and stones were created, they are not gods to be worshipped, The “great sea monsters” were not gods, they were created by God. That aspect of the prevailing pagan beliefs is assumed by the original hearers, so a lot of the significance is left out, and we need a good commentary to help us with such.

How come the inbreeding didn’t have the kids turn out retarded? Is it God’s grace?

Remember Adam and Eve were created in a “perfect” state free from corruption including genetics. There was no early need to not marry siblings.

This, I think, answers the question.
At that point there were no such things as genetic defects.
Those came later, probably gradually over the generations.
